Music from the heart of the struggle and from one of African Music's pioneers.
Editorial review
You have to hand it to Thomas Mapfumo -- the man is never afraid to keep pushing at the boundaries of his music. On this disc, which features some young talent as part of the Blacks Unlimited, he not only plays his trademark mbira-based chimurgena music, but also casts his net as far as Mali with "Ndiyani Waparadza Musha," a mix that works very smoothly, mixing two African cultures, while "Set the People Free" is really African rock with an English language rap in the middle -- and very good it is. Of course, his basic style forms the heartbeat on tracks like "Tinofara" and "Wandiita Muroyi," with the three mbiras as his rhythm section, the core of his sound. "Chimurenga (The War of Liberation)" reaches out across Africa, and "Sumba Dzenhabvu (The Lions of Soccer)" touches the world with an English-language lyric over a jaunty groove, celebrating the 1998 World Cup. One of the fullest and most diverse albums of Mapfumo's career, it's a sign that he's not going to rest on his laurels and stand still. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
From the Leopard Man: ' If we were to judge a book by its cover, this album would seem to be a cheap pirate single. But let the dog see the rabbit! This is actually Thomas Mapfumo's best disc for many a year. And that's saying something for a veteran of African music who has been active for 30 years.'
From High Life World Music: African comeback album of the year ... this beautifully recorded disc finds Mr. Thomas in fine form.... scintillating guitar work by Joshua Dube, the trademark mbiras holding down the groove and a big, rich sounding horn section, this is a welcome addition to the majestic music of Zimbabwe. Highly recommended.
Opiyo Oloya From Roots World: Zimbabwe's Thomas Mapfumo pioneered the raucous chimurenga sound ... Mapfumo has perfected a distinct sound featuring mbira, electric guitars and sharp chorus lines... Chimurenga '98 (Anonymous Web Productions / www.anonymousweb.com) extends chimurenga to embrace other musical styles ...
↓ more ↓From the opening track till the very last, Mapfumo, backed by his perennial Blacks Unlimited, cook up a storm.
From Flagpole Magazine: ... feel the connections between Africa and Uptown New Orleans at a live show by a great African performer, ... Thomas Mapfumo, the so-called "Lion of Zimbabwe." ... Mapfumo has created a style of pop music known as Chimurenga, which is amply demonstrated on the new aNOnym release Chimurenga '98. Mapfumo is a fierce social critic he was jailed for his views by the Rhodesian government in the '70s ... some of the most beautiful music in the world, ... and its loping, interwoven rhythms are capable of inducing out-of-body experiences.
