Experimenting with fresh ideas about the shape and structure of music, Make Amends' sound is euphoric, cathartic, and catastrophic all in the same moment.
Bio / Background
Make Amends was conceived in a small dorm room in late June 2005, when three students of the Academy of Art University met to try out something new. Darren, on bass, had been playing for a few months with good friend Madison, who played guitar. The two had recently befriended a new student, Meghan, who had expressed a desire to get back into singing, after a long hiatus from choirs and vocal ensembles. Upon completion of their first song, they chose the name "Make Amends" after a prose piece written by a friend, and began to hammer out more material.
In fall of that year, Jason, high school friend and former band mate to Darren, joined in on second guitar and the quartet recorded "What Remains of the Day", their EP, over a long night and into the following morning. Differing visions and hectic schedules seemed to spell the end for the group in the winter, and Jason eventually was forced to quit due to time constraints.
↓ more ↓The original three pressed on, slowed but not stopped, and eventually found new friend Taylor on guitar in spring of 2006. The four wrote new material, expanding out with a renewed energy.
Summer of that year saw major changes to the band, in the loss of founding member Meghan (vocals, synth, and keys) and second guitarist Taylor due to creative differences. With shows already scheduled, the two remaining members quickly recruited longtime friend Eriko to fill in on synth and keys, and reworked material to fill in the gaps from the second guitar. After a few shows, they were spotted by a local drummer, Nick, who was eager to join them. Nick's heavy-hitting added a lot of force to the style and in mid fall of 2006, the four recorded their "Weightless" EP and played several successful shows in support of it. At the end of the year, Cody, a former band mate of Madison, joined in on vocals and synths, and Eriko moved to cover second guitar duties. At this point, the band felt truly complete and ready to go places, and after significant live experience and with new material they recorded "Because Nobody's Real" in June 2007. From here, the sky is the limit.
