Bio / Background
MAG Project was created by Marc-André Gingras (a.k.a. MAG) as a way to express and promote himself as a musician. MAG was already an active in the area as a session musician, and so it was time to move forward. Thus, with a lot of musical education and lots of live work under his belt, MAG was ready to tackle the project of writing and recording his own material. The band was later formed in order to promote the album in a live context. The result was a band that is tight, powerful, and very precise. The guys have a lot of fun together and that’s a key element of its success.
After three years of private classes, MAG started his collegial studies of popular and jazz music in 1996 which he completed with honours. Upon completion, he already had a lot of live experience with different bands as well as a job in a well known private music school in the area. MAG then completed a degree in jazz playing at the local University.
↓ more ↓The learning of jazz music greatly helped the development of his style as well as the skills needed to make a living out of playing music. It is then that the need for composition really blossomed. Feeling a good reaction from his fans, the project took life in the summer of 2003 by the writing of the album.
Given the non-commercial aspect of his music, the album was entirely self-produced. The term "solo album" applies here more than anywhere else where MAG took the roles of producer, sound engineer, mixing engineer, player, writer and arranger. With the help of a couple of friends, drums, bass and guitars were recorded at home and often during the night. After months of hard work, the album is born in july 2004. The CD is well received and MAG tackles the next step : taking the project live.
The band is given great opportunities. MAG Project has the chance to play in front of big crowds opening for well known bands. Among them, the Finnish band "Sonata Arctica", the Brazilian band "Angra", the British band "Arena", and legendary guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, for whom MAG Project opened fo his 2006 canadian tour (Quebec, Montreal, Toronto). The public's reaction is amazing and the future is promising.
Marc-André works as a guitar teacher and session guitarist in Quebec city since 1999. This line of work has brought him to almost all the large venues of the province and beyond. As a session musician, he has now played in hundreds of shows with a lot of different artists in a lot of different styles. Aside from his solo project, MAG currently plays for death metal band Quo Vadis and power metal band Forgotten Tales.
