The first time John MacAllar strummed a chord he was hooked.
From that day on , he wanted nothing more than to write songs.
↓ more ↓And write he did.
Within two years he would see a song he wrote called "Here I Am" take first place in an Island song contest.
That was 1981.
Twenty-Three years later his desire to create new music and to share that with others has not waned one iota.
In fact, he's finally taken that giant step forward and released an album comprised solely of original material.
MacAllar , a native of O'Leary , served both as producer and arranger for the record. Wonderment is a dream realized for MacAllar, who's still plying his craft on a regular basis at venues around the province, including a monthly slot at the Dundee Arms in Charlottetown.
Its certainly been a labour of love MacAllar said in an interview this week.MacAllar has written more than 40 songs, 15 of which he considered for this record.I then whittled those 15 down to 10.The themes addressed in MacAllars music are many and varied.
Wonderment was inspired by a photograph he liked of an outdoor scene that depicted him and his trusted canine companion, Odie paddling down the Percival River near Alaska, P.E.I.
On the Ice is a song about the enjoyment he's drived from playing rec hockey with his buddies.Good friend of mine was about the frienship that has evolved over time between him and Odie, who is featured on the album flexing his canine pipes on a novel little entry called Milkbone Blues.
MacAllar says the songs are very personal. It's about my journey through life, my early childhood to present day. It's about my experiences and what i've ,what I value, what I believe in.They truly are very personal songs in a way, they're my best friends.
Musically the album is also a mixed bag.My music is a little bit of everything - rock, pop, folk, blues. My biggest influence was 70's british rock, the music of artist like Queen ans Supertramp. My mother was English so anything that came through the doors from England got her stamp of approval.
She was a big Supertramp fan.But my music seems to work for alot of people.I've got kids in their teens listening tio it and prople in their 60's.
