Creative & Authentic :: Tinges of southern rock, funk jams, intimate ballads and everything in between will make Lucas Allen and his band one to listen to for a long time.
Bio / Background
It's hard to be a boy in Indiana and suck at basketball, even worse when an 80's movie title of your namesake was about a total nerd. Lucas Allen had to compensate in some other area. At the age of 13, he picked up a guitar (seems chicks didn't dig the trumpet). After strumming along to a Beatles songbook front to back, he had developed an affinity for music. "It wasn't about being cool or showing other people what I could do," Allen says, "but more that I had something I could create on my own." He had found what so many of us are looking for: a place to belong.
At that same point in time, Lucas found real security in his faith. "I didn't have a terrible life or anything...but I found the longings I had fulfilled by God more than anything/anyone else."
It didn't take long for these two passions of faith and music to merge...and collide.
↓ more ↓"It was kind of cool to have your picture in the yearbook both playing in a rock band and praying with a few other kids, but it was also hard to be a real 'rocker' and a 'good little Christian boy.' Later as I began to connect my spirituality and my music, things really seemed to make sense."
When asked about playing "Christian music," Lucas winces. It's not that he tries to be covert about his faith; he just has never heard any other music described by lyrics or spiritual perspective. "Do people call Sting's work 'Tantric music'? I think I play rock; be it folk, jam/funk, acoustic or what-have-you. I sing about my view of life. Jesus being my friend shouldn't put me in a whole other class. Of course Mostly Hymns [his latest release] is all spiritual songs, both classic and original; but if you see us in concert, you'll realize this isn't just church in a different setting. We like to play our songs, tell the stories and jam a little...okay, a lot. The guys who play with me are amazing. They raise the bar on me."
A self-described so-so musician, Lucas thinks it's more than skill that makes people want to listen. "I never have thought of myself as excelling in any one thing like guitar playing, singing, songwriting, etc. I can do them all to varying extents, but I think what people appreciate is the authenticity and the heart that's in it."
Years down the road, these things still go together. After college and 5 years in youth ministry, Lucas decided to give it a go with music. Working various jobs to pay the various bills, he spends time doing music for a church, recording his music and playing shows where/whenever possible. His wife, Eva, and sons, Wolfe and Judah, keep him happy and inspired.
