Original Female Fronted Highlife Juicy Juju World Booty Pop
Editorial review
There are more world influences -- from Afro-Caribbean rhythms to Brazilian melodies to African drums -- in Lovewhip's music than in the average '90s ska band, but the effect is similar. Bouncehall is a fun-loving, summer party album that is undeniably danceable while it's playing and quickly forgotten when it's not. Regardless, this sophomore follow-up to the band's debut, Whip It Baby!, is a genuinely catchy dance record. Singer and guitarist Erin Harpe has a definite knack for Jamaican vocals and the occasional "simmer down" ("I Don't Know Why"), all delivered with a sexy and soulful groove. Plus, her ability to combine African highlife, soukous, and juju with Jamaican ska and reggae (the reggae number "Ego Fantastic" or the feel-good "Jambo Bwana" for example) is pretty innovative. Get this band to play your house party -- because when Harpe sings "come with me to the dancefloor now...all you have to do is move your feet and shake your body to the beat," it's guaranteed you'll be there shimmying and shuffling with a big smile on your face. But when the party's over and all the guests are gone, you'll be pretty unlikely to throw on the CD. ~ Charles Spano, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Lovewhip is a high-energy four-piece female-fronted world-pop dance band from Boston, Massachusetts, lead by the soulful diva guitar goddess Erin Harpe. Playing their own unique brand of world groove music that they call "world booty pop," the Boston Globe exclaims that "Lovewhip has a celebratory and upbeat feel that has kept crowds dancing everywhere they play."
Lovewhip has been setting the dancefloors on fire constantly touring up and down the East coast from Bar Harbor, ME to Key West, FL in promotion of their first CD Whip it baby! on their own record label, Juicy Juju Records. Since its release in the summer of 2000, Whip it baby! has sold over 3000 copies.
Lovewhip recently came out of the studio with their long-awaited sophmore CD, Bouncehall, also on Juicy Juju Records. Bouncehall includes ten of the hottest songs from their over the top live show.
↓ more ↓The CD ranges from the Jamaican dancehall inspired title track "Bouncehall," to crowd-pleasers such as "I Don't Know Why," to dubbed out reggae songs like "Winnie the Wailer," to the girl-power anthem "Ego Fantastic," and the "Bouncehall Super Special Remix," produced by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of the Talking Heads and the Tom Tom Club, and remixed by DJ Monkone from NYC, all tied together by mesmerizing vocals and horns, and the vibe we all need, HAPPINESS. LOVEWHIP makes you HAPPY! Following the CD release in May 2003 Lovewhip will be
touring the East Coast extensively, and then set their Loveship sails west for a national tour in the fall.
Lovewhip's world-pop dance music takes the styles of African highlife, soukous, and juju and mixes them with Jamaican reggae and ska, always maintaining a strong pop sensibility. Sublimely catchy tunes like "Come Down JJ," "No More You," and "Bodega, My Son," have made Lovewhip's first CD Whip it baby! a crowd favorite. Lovewhip's great vocal harmonies and blasting saxophone solos will put a smile on your face,
cause your booty to vibrate, and encourage a sultry motion to eminate from all parts of your body.
All Lovewhip members can crack the whip in their own right. Lead singer Erin Harpe's background is in delta blues and it comes through in her passionate and vampy vocal style. She is also Lovewhip's main guitar player, weaving melodic Afro-pop guitar lines with percussive Jamaican skanks on her jet black Gibson guitar. Singer, sax player, and guitarist Sistah Nancy Loedy brings to her singing and playing a sexy depth, charm, and charisma that out and out wail. Bass player Juicy Jim Countryman, with his Afrofunk world punk style, lays down the bass so hard he nearly grooves out of his shoes, all
the while providing a third vocal harmony. Drummer and superwhip sex star Krazy Karly Karlito Grohmann rips up a slew of crazy cross-cultural dance beats, never tiring in his main aim to vibrate the dancefloor. So don't miss the chance to catch the East Coast's best worldfunkpunk dance band now - before the secret's out! Lovewhip makes you happy!!!
