A very annointed and modern, post-bop approach to African-American sacred music.
Bio / Background
Lift Every Voice is nominated "Best Gospel Jazz Album of the Year" by the Urban Gospel Alliance and won for "Best New Gospel Jazz Artist!"
Mark Lomax is an extremely gifted composer, arranger, and drummer! He's played with everyone from trumpeters Clark Terry, and Nicholas Payton to ledgendary pianist Ellis Marsalis and Victor Goines (Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra). Mark is now playing with Delfeyo Marsalis while leading his own groups in the mid-west.
This record is a fabulous debut for his new trio! It has something for everyone! If you like trio jazz then this is for you. If you like Negro Spirituals this is for you. If you are looking for annointed music that you won't find on the radio, this is for you. So buy one for yourself and for a friend or family member, they'll thank you for it!
B.G. 2004
For centuries now, the Negro Spiritual has been a great source of fuel and power that was used to strengthen and unite the oppressed black American.
↓ more ↓These were the songs that were sung on the plantations in good and bad times, to warn of danger and to spread news of escape. The Negro Spiritual was used as a weapon of peace and unity during the 1950's and 60's struggle for civil rights. This Negro music has inspired and united the oppressed people in America for centuries. Now, on the surface, things are better, and for the first time since the first Africans landed upon these shores we have a generation of blacks that have little or no knowledge of their Spiritual music. This is a very dangerous and precarious position to be in, for it is the music of the Negro Spiritual that carries within its lyrics and folk melodies the strong, yet tragic, history of a beautiful and chosen people. Within its melodious structures lies the strength to deal with the new millennium forms of oppression, and continuing terrorism (at home and abroad), and cultural genocide. Music this important and this powerful must never be forgotten. It must be sung in times of peace and war so that black America will grow strong and rise to be the people God called them to be in the times before time began. It is this very reason that recordings such as this exist.
The trio on this recording is outstanding. Pianist William Menefield is superb! His swing, touch and sensitivity has reached a level of maturity well beyond his years. Dean Hulett is the bass! His approach to the bass is as modern as it gets while still holding close to tradition and providing a solid foundation. 'Lift Every Voice!' was a blessing to make and I know it will be a blessing to you!
