hauntingly soulful vocals set against sparse guitar sounds, melodic and memorable.
Bio / Background
The ever increasingly ubiquitous girl with a guitar singer/songwriter she is not.
loretta lynn perez has managed to avoid being lumped into the ani/jewell/sarah category.
her lyrics read like poetry or short stories, her vocals haunting and soulful while her guitar yeilds hypnotic offerings of accompaniment.
yup it's true she has managed to create a style that is strangly familiar yet maintains a sense of originality.
she has been told that her vocal stylings and stage presence are reminiscent of icons such as marianne faithful and patti smith, she has also been loosely compared to kristin hersh, nina simone and lucinda williams.
the overwhelming majority of her fans however, insist that she sounds exactly like loretta lynn perez.
originally from sacramento california, loretta moved to seattle washington in 1992 to pursue an acting career.
6 years and a few too many auditions later loretta packed up her guitar and headed to taos, nm.
↓ more ↓it was there in the arid high desert that she realized she needed to sing.
she spent a summer in taos hiking the mountains and playing guitar, writing snippets of songs that the perfectionist in her wouldn't allow to be finished, and then in the fall of 1998 she moved back to sacramento california.
by may of 1999 loretta had hit a few open mics and already was making noise for herself in the close knit music community.
she was invited to play at a benefit for w.e.a.v.e (women escaping a violent enviornment) she silenced the sold out crowd and left them wanting more.
loretta spent two years playing around sacramento and the pacific northwest peddling personality and a little 5 song cassette she recorded with the help of victor damiani (former bassist for cake).
loretta then decided to leave the comforts of home and a supportive fan base for the east coast where she currently resides.
since arriving in new york city in fall of 2000 loretta has managed to cultivate quite an audience thru her live performances around both brooklyn and manhattan.
loretta completed her very first full length cd titled 'untitled' just in time to take it with her to the national women's music festival in muncie, indianna where she played to a crowd of 700 on the showcase stage.
loretta tries to keep everything on an organic level, letting the tide take her where it will, she does however plan to expand her live shows to include more of the east coast and perhaps take a cross country tour sometime in the not so distant future.
her current cd is availible right here on cd baby.
do yourself a favor and buy it.
