Haunting and hypnotic Celtadelic folk. Ever wonder what CD might be playing in the adyton of Delphi when it's your turn to consult the oracle? It's rumored that Pythia prefers 'Tree Over Sea' because "it stirs the blood."
Bio / Background
'Tree Over Sea' is an album of celtadelic folk: a marriage of San Francisco psychedelia with ancient Irish root music; a time travel trip to a megalithic burial tomb by way of 1960’s Haight-Ashbury. The sound is something old, something new, something borrowed, and quite definitely blue. To listen is to be hypnotized and to fall into a lucid dream. Outside, the moon is full and a thunderstorm brews; inside, the fireplace roars in the library of a castle where you find yourself translating a grimoire of Ogham inscriptions. Neil Young and Harry Chapin collaborate over absinthe in the cellar while Emmylou Harris joins Fleetwood Mac in the turret. When the last note fades, you awaken refreshed with the residue of patchouli on your pillow.
Lisa plays fingerstyle acoustic guitar in alternate tunings and her playing is reminiscent of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn of Pentangle fame.
↓ more ↓The music is future-past; the songs sound like ancient transcriptions recovered from a bog, but you’ve never heard anything like them before. Having studied Eastern and Western mythology, the Tarot, runes, astrology, and symbolism; Lisa’s lyrical inspiration runs the gamut from a Zen koan or the Mabinogion to a Russian submarine disaster or Julia Butterfly’s yearlong tree-sit to save a redwood. Each song is assigned an explanatory I Ching hexagram including the title 'Tree Over Sea' which means truth. The only way to imagine these kaleidoscopic tunes is to become an initiate.
Here's what Jackie Hayden from HotPress Magazine has to say about Tree Over Sea:
“San Francisco singer-songwriter Lisa Hake describes her work as ‘Celtadelic folk’, although she also shows evidence of influences from the non-Celtic English folk scene on her superbly-packaged album Tree Over Sea. ‘Riddle’ also has a contemporary feel to it, with Hake’s light voice surfing over a backing that features typically eloquent playing from Conor Brady and James Blennerhasset. ‘Man-Made’ is a deceptively-searing track about domestic abuse and ‘Foxglove’ is vintage pastoral folk, replete with tasty harmonies. Hake is an assured performer, with a beguiling voice and a literate turn of phrase. Watch out for her.”
Sing Out! Magazine chose “The Magic Blue Bottle From Sidhe” for inclusion in their Summer 2007 issue and CD sampler.
Lisa is featured storytelling songwriter by Narrative Music.
