When a woman can say what she feels without holding back, it's better for everyone.
Bio / Background
I was born in upstate New York, the seventh of eight kids. We had a dairy/crop farm. The last thing I ever wanted to be was a vulnerable little girl. But I was, and I became, in turn, a vulnerable young woman. Some of us are lucky enough to toughen up with time, and I guess I’ve done that. It's just taken a hell of a lot of time.
A lot of talented folks played on this record, and they helped me get these songs out. Melanie Mason, Robbie Magruder, Davey Yarborough, Karen Collins, and Diana Quinn—to name a few. I've got more songs in the works and another CD comin’ when the money comes around.
“Sweet Bye and Bye” is my way of saying goodbye to and having reckonings with people I have cared about and loved in my life—my dad with “Last Gift” and my mother with “The Shore” –and there’s the friends and lovers—“Friend in the Fall” and “Someone.” There are more dramatic kinds of losses, too.
↓ more ↓"Wendy’s Song" is the story of a woman, a child really, who was the first of Green River Gary’s victims. It’s a murder ballad from the other side, I suppose. "Preachers and Slaves" is less about loss and more about what people give up when they stop thinking for themselves.
It’s stuff we all go through, but mostly from a woman’s perspective. Maybe this was, for me, a kind of labor of love. But we women are used to that.
