A Road To Anywhere by The Linville Ridge Band

The dissolving of Damascus Road came as it was becoming more widely recognized and accepted in the bluegrass community. To complete the band, Corey Pittman was invited to become a member. We all share multiple duties. Perry contributes baritone, tenor and some lead vocals as well as the banjo and dobro chores. Aaron sings mostly baritone, but will contribute a bit of lead and tenor while playing mandolin and some guitar. Corey will sing primarily tenor and some lead, primarily play guitar and occasionally the fiddle. Mike holds down the lowdown with the upright bass and manages most of the group business.

By forming The Linville Ridge Band, two new opportunities arose. First, the decision was made to switch to a secular Bluegrass band. Bluegrass music has always been deep within our hearts. We (Perry, Aaron and Michael) felt we should venture into the differing territory of secular Bluegrass. We have collectively followed it for the past 20+ years and have always enjoyed listening to it as well as attending festivals, shows and sharing it with close friends and family, both from within and without the BG musical community.

Secondly, this would give us opportunity to share some of the original songs we have written over the past 15 years or so. Hearing great songs presented by great performers within the BG realm has inspired us to attempt to contribute to the vast catalogue of songs enjoyed by performers and listeners. This recording will be available in late winter-early spring of 2004.

There are no guest artists on these songs, nor will there be any on the finished recording. Just four individuals sharing their love of Bluegrass music. It feels really good to be able to share a musical vision with folks who have the willingness to travel where ever the music may lead.

The name, The Linville Ridge Band, was chosen to tie us to the beautiful part of the Blue Ridge Mountains where we call home. Linville Mountain (it's proper name) was mentioned in the classic song "The Brown Mountain Lights" by Scotty Wiseman, native son to the area.

We are extremely proud of the musical heritage associated with the part of the country we call home. Bluegrass was formed by individuals from this region and we owe a great debt for the foundations they have laid.

Aaron Ramsey is the 2002 winner of the prestigious Merlefest Mandolin contest. His contributions will be baritone singing, primarily playing the mandolin and will also double on the guitar. Aaron also endorses Lebeda mandolins. He is the only person we know of to have had a pet crow.

Corey Pittman plays guitar, sings lead and soaring tenor harmonies and also plays fiddle on some songs. Driving the bus is a major responsibility as well. Corey has just moved back to Avery County and we're happy for him. He said it is really good to eat Mom's groceries and sleep in his own bed for a change!

Perry Woodie brings many years of playing to The Linville Ridge Band. Perry sings an occasional lead and contributes harmonies. He is continually looking for material and helps a great deal with the arrangements of songs. Banjo is Perry's main instrument but he plays a mean dobro as well. He says it bites him all the time.

Mike Ramsey rounds out the group on the upright bass. He sings lead and the occasional bass vocal on quartet Gospel numbers, Mike also contributes quite a few original songs. Being manager for The Linville Ridge Band is also part of his duties. Mike is the only member qualified to play a piece of furniture
