Lush soundscapes balanced by enthralling melodies, an eastern massage for your soul. Eno meets Hendrix."dreamy clouds filled with echoes and eerie twang as if Pink Floyd had been produced by Confucius."
Editorial review
Levi Chen's first album, Liquid Gardens Tao, featured the artist on just the solo electric guitar. On Meditation of My Soul, Chen expands his musical expression by adding the Chinese gu cheng, a Chinese harp similar to the Japanese koto. The gu cheng adds an Oriental twang, not to mention musical scale, to the album. Chen has experimented greatly with the reverb and sustain possibilities of his Fender Stratocaster guitar (circa 1976), and he can manipulate it in such a way that he can play both instruments at once. As he writes in the liner notes: "No synthesizers. No samplers. No overdubs." Appreciate this feat going in, because you will lose yourself in Chen's heady music in no time. The Fender carries resonant, echoing drones, sultry and watery phrases, and passionate pleas to the universe. The gu cheng sound offers waves of dulcimer-like ripples and wise commentary on the dynamic lines of Chen's guitar. After you regain your senses, you can wonder again...just how did he do that? Perhaps he can play with his toes. ~ Carol Wright, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
10 “meditations” recorded live in the studio exactly as Levi performs his “Solo Duets” on the streets. Recorded in November 1995, immediately upon return from a summer street tour of Europe, this is a document of the blossoming of his technique for simultaneously performing on the Chinese Harp and Fender Stratocaster. Levi’s approach to composition is clear on this CD, as evidenced by the classic “Ceremony” and “ Fearless.” A timeless album and “instant mood.”A definitive CD for meditation, yoga, massage or relaxation. Exceptional for romance and making love. Meditation Of My Soul is a perennial best seller and a true classic...
“Levi Chen has concocted an East/West and further west fusion…beautifully fragile melodies draped in ethereal atmospheres.” John Diliberto, Billboard Magazine
“Definitely on of today’s better string players. Love the use of the zither.

Bringing together the sounds of the electric guitar with the Gu Zheng, a harp-like instrument with a 3,000-year history in China, Levi cretes expansive, smokey sonic atmospheres that bridge musical taste and history all at once.” CD Baby
“Personally this is my favorite…well until Devocean came along.” Marcella Yin Yang Records
