Bio / Background
Leonard King was born in Detroit, Michigan where he has been able to absorb the multi-cultural musics of the entire metro area. He has performed with many artists such as Donald Byrd, Johnnie Taylor, Al Green, Herb Ellis, Barbara Dane, Eddie Kendricks, Pigmeat Markham, James Carter, and many others.
He's a drummer/vocalist/arranger who is totally interested in learning music without adhering to the limitations of genre confinement. Currently he tours the world with saxophonist James Carter and is a member of the Southpaw Isle Steel Band, in addition to fronting his own groups such as Oopapada, and the Visger Road Drum Band.
"Extending The Language" happened in a very natural way. Organist Gerard Gibbs and drummer Dr. Prof. Leonard King are members of the James Carter Organ Trio which tours the world regularly. King's original idea was to create a CD with just the organ/drums combination. Afterwards, he decided to ask James Carter to be a guest on two of the selections.
