Bio / Background
Long Beach Cake is the current incarnation of the group Cake which jammed all over Long Beach and LA in the early 90's. Below is a brief overview of the rise and fall of Cake.
Cake formed in 1991 when Steve Cross and Rob Fadtke began writing songs as a duo. We jammed together and wrote the songs Incubation Courtship, Snake Oil, and others. In 1992 we hooked up with Rebecca Lynn, a violinist we had played with briefly in 1991 in a project called Tastes Like Chicken. We began writing together with our bassist Steve Rodgers of The Brotherhood of Death. We wrote Pop Song, Kaleidesthesia and refined Snake Oil and penned a few others since forgotten. In 1992 Steve Rodgers left the band and we hired Scott Evers on bass. He learned the material we had at the time and we recorded a demo on our 4 track. We used the demo to get our first gigs at Bogarts in LB, Raji's in Hollywood and some bar in a strip mall in Orange.
↓ more ↓The first time we jammed with Evers we wrote the song Wahevers which actually made it to the CD. By late '92 Evers left the band to join Wood & Smoke. We jammed with Phil Sevelle, a Long Beach guitar hero, playing bass. We even did a gig with Phil in Fullerton with Trip The Spring, but ultmately his style did not fit the band. We got our fourth bass player late that year and entered into our most prolific songwriting period. His hame was Marcus Mindte. We wrote Ten Tongues Past The Dirtyard, Enjoy Cake, Small Giraffe, Floating Appendage, Turkish Would, Pirate Jam, Maggie and several others during this period. We played regularly at The Whiskey's all ages Monday night shows. The Que Sera in Long Beach was another venue we used to pack in those days. Our momentum continued to gain speed and we met producer Ross Robinson who wanted to record us. We did some pre-production with him back at the Cake House. We played a showcase for his $$ man at Club Lingerie with another prospect of his - a band named Korn. Unfortunately, the $$ man wanted us to change our songs to become more radio friendly and we refused. We had some legal trouble with our name, Cake, because of a band with the same name who happened to get a hit on the radio. For some reason we fired Marcus and hired a new bass player Ted Jr. about that time. We decided to record on our own and went to a studio in Orange and recorded Ten Tongues, Enjoy Cake and Kaleidesthesia. Later we hired Anthony Arvizu as our engineer/producer and recorded and mixed the songs that became The Lungpigs CD. We changed our name to The Lungpigs and did a CD release in 1995. By this time the confusion caused by the name change contributed to a steady waning of our crowd base. We wrote some new songs that did not seem to go over too well and informally disbanded. Becky and Ted started The Bibs and moved to Hollywood and the live music of Cake ceased to exist for several years. In 1999 we regrouped as The Rocket Scientists with Tim Bugge on bass and played one show at DiPiazza's. Now in 2005 you can see us rock again with our newest and finest bassist - Billy Blaze.
