Bio / Background
Mike Lasala (pronounced luh-sal-uh) is a New Haven, CT based singer / songwriter who merges gritty vocals, introspective lyrics, and groove-laden acoustic guitar to create his signature brand of soul-searching acoustic rock. Citing Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, Steely Dan, and Neil Young among his influences, Mike conveys life lessons, observations, and experiences that seek to reassure others they are not alone on the journey we call life.
Mike grew up in Guilford, CT--a self-described "blue collar kid in a white collar town"--and it was the frequent taunting of peers coupled with the dysfunction of home-life that prompted him to seek solace in music. "I immersed myself in music to escape the reality of my day-to-day existence," says Mike. And so at the age of thirteen Mike got his first guitar; a Les Paul copy with the word "Trump" on the headstock. "I took lessons for the first six months but found I didn't like the strict regimen so I just started playing by ear.

Mike's muse has taken him from guitarist in a Connecticut-based hard rock band, to wandering troubadour as he spent two and a half months traveling cross-country, to performing songwriter in the coffeehouses of Northern California, and back to the East coast, with each experience serving to strengthen Mike both musically, and as a human being, thus prompting the self-imposed moniker, Acoustic | Rock | Evolving | Soul.
October 2003 welcomed the release of Mike's long-awaited debut, Somewhere to Be, which was recorded by Pete Szymanski and mastered by Roger Arnold (R.E.M, Ani DiFranco). With song styles ranging from storytelling (George the Gifter, Ninth Square Marketeer), to life-pondering (I Fell, Everybody Else), to just down right groove-laden (Impatient), Mike's debut had a broad appeal.
And so the journey continues as Mike sets his sights on growing a fan base by taking the stage solo, and with the occasional backing band, at coffeehouses, clubs, and street corners throughout the Northeast. But whatever the outcome, one thing's for sure, Mike will continue to evolve. Expect a new full length CD in early 2006.
