New Orleans Contemporary Funky Soul Jazz featuring Micheal Ray, Frederick Sheppard, David Torkanowsky, Micheal Pellera, Jim Singelton.
Bio / Background
When eight seasoned New Orleans players get together to record compelling new material, the sound is way more than the sum of the parts. The Chris Lacinak Group - Chris Lacinak, drums; Frederick "Shepp" Shepard, tenor sax; Scott Bourgeois, alto saxophone; Michael Ray, trumpet; Jim Singleton and Jesse Boyd, bass; and David Torkanowsky and Mike Pellera, piano - are sharp and fresh on "BOOM", their first CD on the Drum Parade label. Timing its release to coincide with their performance at the 2004 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, a world-class event that draws several hundred thousand people, the band sent fans home hungry for more. Spontaneity was their goal, and group improvisation their method.
Drummer, composer, group leader CHRIS LACINAK integrates the ease of a New Orleans home-boy with the fast-paced sophistication of Manhattan.
↓ more ↓It's no wonder: he's been back and forth between these two musical meccas for almost 20 years, spending nearly 10 years teaching at the Drummer's Collective and moving around in a wide array of musical genres. Chris has performed with such artist as Carmen Lundy, Maria Mauldar, Bobby Radcliff, Earl King, Stir Jried with Buddy Cage,Tab Benoit, Eric Lindell, Neulander, Tribe Nunzio, Rick Margitz,......
About the motivation for "BOOM", Chris recalls, "Although I participated in many styles of music, returning to New Orleans brought me back to the styles I've always loved. Being home and hearing the sounds of New Orleans again made me want to write and play songs influenced by our traditions...working with my old and new friends was a real treat. That was inspiration enough to record."
And reason enough to listen. Writing in the May issue of Offbeat Magazine, reviewer Brenda Lee notes, "BOOM is a lively, and mostly improvised collection capturing the best of what the really good New Orleans jazz musicians have to offer. These are not the guys who play jazz because they have to; these are the guys who play jazz because they love to, and they sound all the better for it."
The Group is touring in support of "BOOM".
The CD Line Up is :
Micheal Ray on trumpet ,who was a member of The Sun Ra Arkestra and still performs with Kool and the Gang. Frederick "Shepp" Shepard on tenor sax has the New Orleans music arena well covered, playing with the legendary Fats Domino as well as with Ray Charles and many of the gritty brass bands that keep the city's blood flowing. When you spot Jim Singleton, one of the most sought-after bassists in New Orleans walking into a club with his bass, you know the night is going to be special. Jim has played with Astral Project, 3 Now 4, and plays in support of many jazz legends passing through town. Popular with audiences, Jim always gets house! Long revered in New Orleans as a real dynamo at the keyboard, pianist Mike Pellera has a long list of credits to his name, most notably as a member of Buddy Rich's band
