Like fire and red wine. Piano-driven singer/songwriter welds pop and rock melodies with the wit and insight of jazz and blues lyrics.
Bio / Background
She doesn’t look very intimidating. She tops out at five feet as she sits down at the piano, surveying the scene with a hint of a smile. Her fingertips caress the keys, slowly…Then heads snap up as she presents the gift that everyone is waiting for…. her voice: so crystal clear, emotion pouring out, and power so sweet that even the bartender stops what he’s doing to listen.
Sassy, smart, sexy are both the girl and her music. Entranced by the irony and humor of life, Cassandra Kubinski is an NYC based singer and songwriter. Her music straddles the sophisticated storytelling of writers like Billy Joel and the searing, powerhouse vocals of rockers like Sheryl Crow and Fiona Apple.
“Hiding Underneath,” Kubinski’s first commercial release, features crystal clear vocals layered over Kubinski’s buttery smooth piano playing.
↓ more ↓Co-produced with Doug Bull, it shines whether pulsing with vibrant attitude (“Hiding Underneath”) or whispering a story of love lost (“Wherever You Wait.”) The EP has garnered attention for Kubinski, including opening slots for Anna Nalick, The October Project, and Ingram Hill, in addition to a spot in the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame New Writers Showcase in June 2005. The final track, “Cradle the Moon,” was also winner of the 2005 Positive Pop Song Contest, and "Wherever You Wait" took Third place in the Pop division of the 2005 Billboard World Song Contest. “Hiding Underneath” is available through all internet retail channels and at www.ckubinski.com.
“Hold the Sun,” due out in late 2006, is Kubinski’s highly anticipated full-length follow up to “Hiding Underneath.” Cassandra will continue her work spreading her music throughout the Big Apple, playing such notable NYC venues as the Bitter End, Living Room (BMI showcase), Knitting Factory, and Rockwood Music Hall. She is thrilled to announce that she is the 2006 winner of the prestigious Abe Olman songwriting scholarship from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, given each year to the year's best and most promising new writers. She is currently co-writing with new talents and also the likes of Gordon Brown (BMG writer and founder of Writers In the Raw), Jennifer Marks (Bartic Records), and Jared Lamenzo/Jan Folkson (producer/engineers, Vanessa Williams). Her music can be heard on internet and terrestrial radio and TV stations from Connecticut to NYC to Hawaii. Her tour dates include colleges, coffeehouses, and theatres throughout the Northeast and as far as Germany.
Cassandra Kubinski began her performing career in Enfield, CT, where she was raised. She squeaked out “Somewhere Out There” at the ripe age of 3 and advanced quickly from there. At 13, she was handpicked by Martin Charnin, lyricist and original director of “Annie,” to play Annie in the 20th anniversary revival of the show at its birthplace, the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, CT. Other leading theatre roles followed, and Cassandra branched out into film and TV as well with performances with Michael J. Fox in “Spin City,” and Anna Paquin and Sean Connery in the film “Finding Forrester.”
Cassandra’s major musical influences are rockers like Aerosmith and Billy Joel, songwriters like Fiona Apple and Bonnie Raitt, Stephen Sondheim, and the insightful young songwriters populating the marketplace. She is also involved as a volunteer performer for LifeBeat, the music industry’s AIDS-fighting organization, and received the 2006 Bob Caviano Service Award from LifeBeat for her dedication to the cause, playing frequent free concerts in AIDS facilities throughout Manhattan. She serves on the board of Add Joy to Learning, an organization teaching the music biz to urban youths. And, as if writing songs didn’t take up enough time, she writes for SongwritersTipJar.com and Indie-Music.com, educational and networking websites for songwriters. She is a Leo, which explains a lot.
