KRAFT QUARTET BIOGRAPHY
The quartet's release "Kraft Quartet EP" was recorded March 6, 2007 in New York City and features Lex Samu playing the flugelhorn, with the Rast Brothers on rhythm and Morgan on fretless guitar.
Since 1993 the members of the Kraft Quartet have been performing and recording music together. Alternate trumpet players Lex Samu and Bryan Lipps, along with the notorious Rast brothers were in a jazz combo with a weekly gig in Winston-Salem, North Carolina when composer Morgan Kraft would write orchestra music at the bar, notating scores and occasionally joining them on piano for a song or two. Both Lex Samu and Bryan Lipps, as well as Madison and Wesley Rast were featured on recordings made by Morgan Kraft between 1994 and 2006. A weekly residency in 2006 at Bar Nine in NYC's Hell's Kitchen brought together Lex, Morgan and Dave Durst performing boogie-woogie and rockabilly.
↓ more ↓Dave has performed and recorded with Morgan since 2005 and appears on two DVD's and one CD featuring Morgan performing on the fretless guitar.
While primarily a blues/jazz/boogie-woogie instrumental group (remember Johnny and the Huricanes), all of the members of the quartet hold a degree in classical or jazz performance from music conservatory except for founder Morgan Kraft who studied composition. Madison Rast is a master bassist and a music professor at Temple University. Lex Samu has been an active member of the New York City jazz and free improv scene for over a decade. Brian Lipps is currently on world tour with Michael Bublé and has performed with such artists as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Chris Isaak. Drummers Dave Durst and Wesley "Big" Rast each regularly perform around the NYC area with other noted groups and artists.
