Insightful songwriter... powerful, bouncy voice that you can hang onto for a sweet ride through a fistful of melodic pop music hooks and folksy rock.
Bio / Background
What makes a performer special? The ability to empathize through a well-turned lyric, the talent for writing an effective hook, a connection with an audience projected from the stage, and a sense of purpose and passion in an artists' music are all qualities possessed by those who are able to make the transition from musician to performer.
New Jersey's Kathy Phillips has shown that possessing all of these qualities is endearing to fans and critics alike. Her debut album, Sway (Black Potatoe Records), released in late 2001, was recognized by The Courier News with nods for Best Female Artist and Best Song for her smooth, polished sound, a graceful connection between pop, rock and folk.
Phillips has been proving herself to be a compelling musical force in the NJ/NY metro area. With a powerful, yet smooth vocal style and an inviting live stage presence, Kathy's intimate ballads and infectious melodic hooks set you on a journey of emotion and honesty.
↓ more ↓As a New Jersey native, she has performed musically throughout the tri-state region and has been showcasing her original songs in various configurations from piano and acoustic guitar duos to a full 5-piece band.
"SWAY", produced by Matt Angus, is a collection of beautifully cathartic songs, with expressive lyrics, heavenly melodies, gorgeous harmonies and excellent musicianship by many of New Jersey's finest players such as Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors, Lenny Kravitz), John Ginty (Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Jewel, Matthew Sweet), Kim Williams, John Davies, Matt Angus & Tom Nelson of Angus, Dave Becker, folk singer/songwriter Gregg Cagno, and NJ jazz guitarist, Walt Bibinger.
Kathy has opened for/shared bill with national acts such as: Hootie & the Blowfish, Styx, Andy Summers (Police), Levon Helm (The Band), Dickey Betts (Allman Brothers), Catie Curtis, Tony Levin Band, John Eddie, Mary Ramsey/John Lombardo (10,000 Maniacs), Chris Barron (Spin Doctors), and Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root).
She has performed at notable venues such as New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), The Stone Pony, The Stanhope House, The Starland Ballroom, The Saint (NJ), The Living Room, The Wetlands, The Knitting Factory, The Postcrypt Coffeehouse (NYC), and The House of Blues (Boston) and also has been a part of the Black Potatoe Music Festival (Clinton, NJ), one of the northeast's most prestigious music festivals.
