Bio / Background
KIVA is proud to release this live album recorded in the Forest Inn of the magical Forest Glen. "Ye Forest Inne," a hotel originally built in 1887, had also served as a casino. At the turn of the century it was bought by John and Vesta Cassedy, who started the National Park Seminary school for girls to replace the schools that the girls couldn't go to during the world war. Later it was sold to the U.S. Army, which used it as an annex to Walter Reed Hospital. The Cassedys built the many fanciful buildings that grace the grounds: a Medieval castle, Dutch windmill, Japanese pagoda, Greek Odeon temple (later burned down in a lightning strike), and more. The ballroom where we recorded was over 100 feet long and 60 feet high, with a huge stage, two tiers of balconies, crystal chandeliers, and stained glass skylights all around the beam-buttressed, vaulted ceilings.
↓ more ↓Greek and Roman statues decorated niches around the ballroom and could also be found throughout the wooded grounds of the Forest Glen property. We were the last group to use that ballroom before they shut the building down permanently. The Forest Inn was a really beautiful place to create music. The sound in the ballroom was perfect. Our audience built throughout the day until we had a great crowd to sing with us in the call and response chants that wound down our recording session. At the end of the day we decided to perform "Go Now" even though we'd only practiced it one time previous to that performance. The song went so well we included it as our final piece on this recording. One truly amazing thing happend during our recording of "Go Now". Within seconds of the last note dropping off into silence the entire city block's power cut off as though it waited for us to finish before crashing. We were so amazed and blown away that we had been able to finish this moving and beautiful song before we lost power. Our friend Coibhidh told us once that "KIVA" in Gaelic could be spelled Cia Bha which means the question "what was?" and also implies what will be. What was is what will be - we take the cup back to the well, drinking from the Mother, and as poets and artists live on the edge of existence. We invite you to drink from the cool pure well of sound and creativity and to remember for a while what was...
