The debut album by Kim Ward - NZ singer/songwriter
Bio / Background
Kim Ward was raised in Whakatane, New Zealand, now living in Tauranga NZ. Kim is a singer/songwriter and guitarist.'Outside my square' is Kim Ward's debut album. Kim's vocals and acoustic guitar form the core of all of her songs, which range from the slide infected blues of 'Hello friend' to the busier and heavier full band treatment of 'blind man walking, to the dreamy 'high here'. Through the album Kim uses rich, ringing open chords and trademark odd meter timings to stamp a unique mark on this engaging collection of songs. Lyrically her songs are upfront and personal, and moving and deeply insightful on the other. This is an album featuring different guitar styles, rich vocals and layered harmonies.
This album was created with the help of some fine Tauranga musicians...Guitarists, Derrin Richards and Mike Kirk(bass also) Mike Furness and U.k guitarist POM (www.lost-contact.com) Drummer Ray Ward. Upright bass player Nigel Masters from Kokomo, also on keyboards.
↓ more ↓Singer/songwriter Kevin Craig on some b.v's, Vivienne Genet on Piano and cello. Nick Ririnui on conga's.
The inner sleeve contains some of Kim's paintings and drawings.

"My father was and still is a musician, although I didn't take much interest in songwriting or music until I was about 18, I asked my father to buy me my first guitar. I am self taught both as a singer/songwriter and guitarist. My father was in the 'Human Instinct' that did extremely well in New Zealand/UK in the 60's. Connection to music is very much a genetic thing, it is in me, I could not imagine a day without singing something or life without creating it. It wasn't something my father ever pushed, infact for thirty years, he did not perform or write, I grew up never really knowing my father had had such a successful career as a musician until I expressed interest myself when my brother became quite the guitarist. 'Embrace yourself' was written for my Father. 'Breathe' is for my Mother who passed away in 1990. The laugh sample is actually my mother, it was taken from an old home video. We recorded the grand piano track, played by Vivienne Genet, and guitar track live in my fathers home, and overlaid the other tracks in the studio at a later point.
'Created by you' is the first song I ever wrote, and I really hadn't considered it for this album, to me it was old, I was 20 when I wrote it. POM and I had gone through high school together and always kept in touch, and in my early 20's had caught up either here in NZ, or in the UK, which is when this song was first recorded, on a very cold, dark morning in London, in a squat in the middle of Westminster in 1991. The beautiful nylon guitar tracks that are on this track were Mandolin the first time round. POM suggested, when I was recording this album that we re-do this song...wow, from opposite sides of the world? Why not, and so we did...He recorded the guitar tracks in his studio in Devon and sent them to me in the post and I put my vocal tracks down from this end"
