Bio / Background
Standing only 5 feet tall, you’ll wonder how a voice this big could come out of someone so small. It seems everything about Kim DiVine is bigger than her body. Armed with her Martin acoustic, this bubbly gal with an open heart will instantly captivate you with her memorable hooks, gorgeous melodies, and a voice that will melt you in your seat.
Her lyrics mostly stem from personal experience, yet you’ll instantly find yourself relating to them as if your own. Her sound is often compared to the pop-rock of Michelle Branch, the angelic voice of Jewel, mixed in with the alternative nature of Damien Rice. But after experiencing a live show or spinning her album, you’ll struggle to fit her into any one category.
Kim has been making waves in Southern California since her move from a little town in Massachusetts.
↓ more ↓She has become a well-known name within the San Diego music scene, garnering awards such as “Best Singer/Songwriter” and “Best Female Vocalist” in the 2006 San Diego H.A.T. Awards (Honoring Acoustic Talent). Kim has performed live on San Diego’s popular 91X FM Morning Show with Cantore, FM 94/9’s “Local Pyle”, and was also a featured artist on KPRI 102.1 FM. She recently appeared with her trio on San Diego’s top news station, KUSI, during their show “Inside San Diego”.
DiVine’s music has also received recognition on an International level. Her song "Home (Stickin’ Around)" along with "What’s It Gonna Be?" made it to the second round of judging in the 2005 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and most recently her song "Trouble" received an honorable mention for being placed in the top 500 entries in the 2007 “Billboard World Song Contest”.
Her most recent EP release, "Hummingbird" is by far her best project to date, showcasing her dynamic voice and wide-ranging, song-writing ability.
“Presenting an intelligent yet melodic approach to pop-folk, San Diego's DiVine has crafted an independent debut with all the polish and vision of a major label release.” - Jim Trageser, North County Times, June 2006
Kim worked with talented producer Keith Orfanides, crafting an album that features six unforgettable songs backed by violin, acoustic and electric guitar, drum and bass, and piano. Each song has it’s own unique feeling and could easily be featured as a single. The perfectly blended sounds are described as a witty mixture of Sarah McLachlan and Coldplay.
"Upon hearing ‘Home’, my first reaction was that this is the most radio ready tune I have heard come out of San Diego since, well, maybe ever." - Craig Yerkes, San Diego Troubadour, October 2006
The autobiographical lyrics of her new album are strikingly tangible yet remain abstract. In her song "Broken", she delivers,
"I think you feel this. It slipped it’s way inside, your shadows darken deceive your mind. Now I am broken the pain inside I breathe into you; you’re numb inside."
While in the opening lines of "What’s It Gonna Be?" she sings,
"Don’t search for love that’s what they say; what you’re looking for will find its way,"
Both songs are featured on her EP, along with "A Nobel Prince" where she hauntingly recounts an unrequited love,
"You loved me and I tried to give into your dreams. My heart can’t bend faster to fit into the seams. And I feel disaster coming on cause you want more than I’m made of; and you’ll fight this battle till you’ve won, but what if you can’t win?"
It will be lyrical content, drive, and natural talent that help Kim to reach her dream of sharing her music on a larger a scale; a scale as wide-ranging as the one she sings.
