A one woman a capella group creates the harmonic and rhythmalicious experience of Undulating, complete with brilliant lyrics, beautiful melodies, and beatboxing.
Bio / Background
"Filled with unending smile-inducing brilliance! This cd is the best surprise of the year so far. There are moments here where Lesley is simply unbelievable...and she was already amazing before she took the sax out of her mouth!" - Daniel Flessas, KBOO 90.7FM Portland, OR
“I think this is an incredibly bold and creative album. It reminds me of Outkast’s transcendence of genre and one media article which described them as ‘funkdefragelistic.’ ” - Bryan Cooley, Event Coordinator for the David Lynch Foundation, Portland, OR.
"More people should really hear what Lesley Kernochan has done on "Undulating." Another brave musical voice...good job!” – Mary Burlingame, KMHD Radio 89.1FM Portland, OR
“Undulating” is a one-woman all vocal orchestra that mixes brilliant lyrics with a profoundly original and delicious sound. Lesley Kernochan is an artist with incredible depth and passion but also a delightful sense of humor and zaneyness.
↓ more ↓The structure of the album is a bit like going to have a sushi dinner...after a few mouth-watering all-vocal pieces Lesley cleans your palate with the pickled ginger of the mock-operatic song “Cockpit”, or the full-blown, pseudo-Spears pop gem “Piece of Meat,” and then places your fresh ears back into the ocean of vocal harmonies and rhythmalicious groove.
Lesley Kernochan is a musical shape-shifter and while she is revealed on this album to be a songwriter and vocalist and possibly some off-shoot species to the Bobby McFerrin phylum, she is also an alto saxophonist who devoted 10 years of her life to being a jazz cat. Originally from Los Angeles, Lesley moved up to Portland, OR to study Music Composition at Lewis & Clark College and has since been sucked into the vortex of creative projects that flood the streets of Portland. She is currently singing and/or playing saxophone in approximately 4 different musical projects including:
The Jellyfish Chorus - a live version of "Undulating" and other all-vocal pieces by Lesley Kernochan. This group is made up of 6 extraordinary performers/singers (2 men and 4 women), complete with 1875-meets-Madonna-esque costumes.
The March Fourth Marching Band - a high-energy, eclectic and mobile unit of good times, taking a Fellini-esque mix of Mardi Gras mayhem, afro beat, Mexican hustle, sultry samba, big band, and gypsy folk to the streets. (www.marchfourthmarchingband.com)
Vagabond Opera - a six piece of alienated classicists and romantic bohemians. Gypsy music, opera, klezmer and cabaret come-ons mingle like emigres trading aliases at an after-hours night club. (www.vagabondopera.com)
And…
Xevi Nova – a Brazilian Folk/Samba/Bossa Nova 5-piece ensemble.
So check out this album! Let it flow through you. The music is pure and honest.
