Editorial review
The scraggly guitars and muscular rhythms of Gone's louder moments seem designed to sell the idea that, when the good girls don't, Keren just might. But didn't Bree Sharp already give listeners a brassier version of "Boy on T.V."? Bree even named names ("David Duchovny, why won't you love me..."). Likewise, for all its window rattling and triumphant chord changes, "W.I.S., Pt. 2" sounds a lot like Hilary Duff's G-rated popternative nugget "Come Clean." It's that meticulously arranged, highly salable sound, popularized by people like Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch with the aid of producers like the Matrix or John Shanks, that becomes the main thrust of Gone. There are ballads here, too, where contemplative guitars pluck over scattered drum programming and atmospheric swirls of synth; Keren herself is in there, but where? "Wake me when you're gone," she sings on the midtempo title track, and the mixture of anger and hurt in her voice is real. But then there are the empty lyrics and general racket of "Save Me," and the percolating electronic bottom end of "Daydreams & Lies" -- where Keren's breathy pitch and filtered backing harmonies could be any post-Britney hair-dye diva -- and Gone becomes a peculiar jumble of things listeners have heard before. This wouldn't be so bad of a thing -- there's nothing wrong with grabbing a little of the spotlight, after all. It's just that, despite writing credits throughout and a back story heralding Keren's determination and desire to rock, Gone's slick sonics and sound-alike brand positioning make it feel like she settled for opportunism. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
pop's next major voice. a blue haired cross between pat benatar and today's most respected modern rock women, gwen and shirley, keren is making a name and place for herself in today's music scene.
writer, performer, producer, player, keren is just beginning to explore what her passions and destinies are. two hours after high school graduation, she left miami for new york. keren began to carve her sound in what would become her adopted home town, building a strong and steady following with each gig. with years playing new yorks lower east side, keren secured her roots at new york's mercury lounge, where bands like the strokes and interpol got their start. with performances on the 3rd and final lilith fair and lending her vocals to jonathan richman's "i'm so confused", the ric ocasek produced project from the punk legend who was featured in the hit "there's something about mary", keren is more than getting her name out there.
↓ more ↓more recently she was asked by seventeen magazine to write and be featured in an article on girls in a boy guitar world and has lent her music to the nbc "scrubs", "miss match", the wb's "everwood" & mtv's "laguna beach". she recently appeared on "scrubs" as a singing nurse as well.
the new incarnation of keren is her l.a. based band that has taken her music to a new level. now she, her pink sg and her band are playing their way through l.a.'s viper room and house of blues. l.a. has also given keren her first full length album ever. she shares producing and writiing duties with such talented friends as mark plati (david bowie, hooverphonic) and brian paturlaski (faith hill, johnny lang), finally giving her music the sound she's craved, laying the groundwork's for a long and lengthy career.
