The amazing, award-winning debut album from Keali`i -- a mix of traditional Hawaiian musical poetic style with a contemporary sensibiliy, delivered from the heart. This is the real deal.
Editorial review
After being discovered at a karaoke competition in the mid-90s, Keali'i Reichel rose quickly to the highest pinnacles of Hawaiian superstardom. His first album, Kawaipunahele, is already a Hawaiian classic. Locals from Honolulu to Kaunakakai own a copy of the album, radio stations play the songs incessantly, and any tourist who sets foot in a music store is likely to walk out with the CD. Reichel goes for the tried-and-true formula: mellow songs, tropical island stylings and sweet, piping Hawaiian vocal tones. A lot of these songs are reminiscent of former Top 40 hits from the mainland, but only a few of them are actually covers. A couple of notable cover tunes are "In My Life," a Beatles tune which has had a Hawaiian verse added, and "If We Hold On Together," which is performed as a duet with Lorna Lim. Most of the songs have Hawaiian lyrics that are completely unintelligible, but it really doesn't matter. They all talk about the same things: romance, friendship, and the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. It's nearly impossible to find this album offensive or intrusive. The lyrics are strictly PG-rated, the music is pretty, and the tone remains even-keel throughout. Like as not, that is why the album has become one of the ?must-have' albums for visitors to Hawaii. ~ L. Katz, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Keali`i was born and raised on Maui, growing up in Lahaina and spending weekends and summers at his grandmother's house in Pa`ia on the windward side of the island. His passion for the language and culture of Hawai`i led him to become the founding director for Punana Leo O Maui, the Hawaiian language immersion school. He also founded his own hula school, Halau Ke`alaokamaile, in 1980 and has won numerous awards over the years. Keali`i is also recognized as one of only five Master Chanters in Hawai`i.
In 1994 he independently produced and released a collection of Hawaiian traditional and contemporary songs and chants entitled "Kawaipunahele." His subsequent music releases, "Lei Hali`a" (1995), "E O Mai" (1997), "Melelana" (1999), and "Ke`alaokamaile (2003) have cemented his place in the Hawaiian music industry.
↓ more ↓All told, he has been awarded 19 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and his consistent placement in Billboard Magazine's World Music and Heatseeker Charts has garnered him international attention.
Keali`i has opened concerts for Bonnie Raitt, LeAnn Rimes, Celine Dion and Sting, and has played such diverse venues as Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, and consistently sells out concerts from Honoka`a to Honolulu, Seattle to San Diego, Okinawa to Osaka.
Keali`i retains his initial goal of presenting new compositions in the Hawaiian language for hula students, and works to dispel long-held stereotypes of Hawai`i's living culture and her indigenous people.
