A compelling songwriter, musician and traditional singer, Kat's passionate, sometimes humorous lyrics create images of great conflict with arresting realism.
Bio / Background
"Here is a collection of songs about destruction and rebuilding, frailty and forgiveness. Life as a human being. They are also a study of some forms of power - one in particular - and the choice to use them. In short, whether the subject is fighting, luck, or the pursuit of beauty, they are all songs about love - the only word." - Kat
The Only Word
Kat Eggleston's incomparable music has dazzled audiences around the world, from intimate clubs to concert halls and festivals. Her original songs have won worldwide acclaim for their lyrical and emotional truth, while her powerful, yet gently beautiful voice showcases material ranging from contemporary songs to the traditions of Great Britain and America with equal grace. Her passionate, sometimes humorous lyrics create images of great conflict with arresting realism. She is a startlingly strong fingerstyle guitarist, often intertwining her songs with Celtic dance tunes arranged for the guitar.
↓ more ↓Her approach to the hammered dulcimer is renowned for its use of space and harmonic texture, as well as its seemingly effortless fluidity and power. Kat presents her music with humor and an honest, joyful presence that can't help but leave each listener touched. Spontaneity is the hallmark of Kat's performance, but listeners can always count on an evening to remember, one that will leave them deeply moved, smiling, perhaps even changed forever.
"Many women and men on today's crowded acoustic scene deserve wider attention. Eggleston is one of them and more. Her clear, expressive voice, fine guitar playing, and sentimental but savvy sensibility combine to lift her above the crowd." David W. Johnson, The Boston Globe
"Compelling, emotional artist who covers humorous and pained material effortlessly. Her music takes a refreshing angle en route to your heart." Folk Roots
"Kat Eggleston not only has the soul of a poet but the voice of an angel, not to mention that the lady can play a mean guitar." Dennis Palkow, Chicago Tribune
"In a clear alto with flawless intonation, Kat Eggleston goes straight to the lyrical and emotional truth of every word and every note." Dwight Thurston, The Canton Voice
Kat Eggleston has recorded three previous solo albums (on the Waterbug label) that have each won the effusive acclaim of audiences, critics and her peers. She also has to her credit two traditional albums with Andrew Calhoun, one duo album with Kate MacLeod, and an ongoing research project toward a recording of ballads from some of the great traditional manuscripts such as the Francis Child collection. She has contributed as well to several compilations and other albums including "The Victory Music Revue," Waterbug's "American Impressionist Songwriters," and Linda Allen's "Washington Notebook." Eggleston has toured nationally and throughout Europe, appearing at clubs and festivals in solo performance with The Kingston Trio, Dougie MacLean, Patty Larkin, Loudon Wainwright, Tom Paxton, Livingston Taylor, Molly O'Brien, Michael Smith, Sally Rogers, Richard Shindell, Utah Philips, Cliff Eberhardt, James Keeleghah, Bill Staines, Erin McKeown, Tom Dundee, Garnet Rogers, David Bromberg, the Otters, Bohola and many others.
"I think you're swell” Cliff Eberhardt
"Eggleston is not only highly literate but a topnotch musician as well. Her poetry reflects a gentle, sensitive writer, with a sobering dose of maturity and smarts." Rapport
"Not only is Kat Eggleston one of the best and most versatile singer-songwriters I've ever heard - there are a whole lot of more celebrated people out there who can't carry her fingerpicks - but every time I hear her she gets distinctly better. If this keeps up she's in serious danger of becoming a national treasure." Author Peter S. Beagle
"The song is always what matters most, she never gets in the way; she is a really wonderful traditional singer!" Michael Cooney
"Singer-songwriter Kat Eggleston is blessed with an embarrassment of talents. Her voice is pure, emotive, and immediately recognizable; she is a virtuoso guitarist and hammer dulcimer player; and her songs blend vivid, often gripping, imagery with memorable lyrical melodies." Michael Parrish, Dirty Linen
