Gypsy Folk rock with dark klezmer and Appalachian undertones. Passionate balladry and intimate songwriting combine to create dark folk magic.
Bio / Background
Andre Karpov is a songwriter living in the Mission District of San Francisco, where he and his band regularly perform. His new album, “Soliloquy,” draws from a range of stylistic influences including dark Eastern European folk dirges, Klezmer and Yiddish melodies, and straight country/delta blues styles of song crafting. The album’s lyrical honesty and poetry are reminiscent of America's great tradition of musical storytelling.
Soliloquy resulted from Andre Karpov’s collaboration with clarinetist Aaron Novik (string and horn arrangements) Joe Lewis (stand up bass) and Jarod Hermann (drums and harmony vocals) and a multitude of other amazing local musicians who came out to contribute their talents; (accordions, trumpets, banjos and string quartets).
The title track, "Soliloquy," is written from the perspective of a man on the periphery of society.
↓ more ↓The lyrics seek to emulate the interior monologue that a homeless man would have while attempting to beg enough change to get intoxicated in order to withstand a cold and rainy night on the streets of San Francisco. Much of the inspiration for this album came from Andre Karpov's own experiences while living in San Francisco, New York, and traveling across Europe. He and the band have begun recording their next album set for release in the summer/fall of 2007
