Bio / Background
Karmedy: the combined forces of karma and comedy, the good and the bad, the balance that is life. This concept is found in the writings of the band. “Everything that happens to us in life makes us who we are, for better or worse," states guitarist and songwriter Josh Holland, "I feel that if you come out stronger and more in tune with your life, it was worth the lesson."
The two founding members, Sean McIrvin and Josh Holland, spent the better part of a year writing and recording their first album. It started when the long time friends got together while working on individual projects. After realizing that insight and inspiration could be taken from one another, they decided to pursue a joint project. The project has become Karmedy.
Something non traditional about the album, especially in this genre of music, is the fact that all of the instruments were recorded by one person. Josh Holland performed all of the guitar, bass, and drums tracks on the album.
↓ more ↓When it came to vocal approach, the two had distinctly different styles that complimented the other. Sean can be handed a microphone, told "Go!" and create lyrics on the fly that rival many groups years of hard work. Josh, on the other hand, will listen repeatedly and get bits of the lyrics at a time. So in the studio, some of the songs were prewritten by Josh then modified by Sean. Others were improv sessions by Sean that Josh would cut and paste into a structure that they could build from. Others went back to the style of writing the lyrics together where ideas would get thrown back and forth until both were satisfied.
The opening song, "Endless Circle", is based on the thought that if you keep repeating the same mistakes, you will follow the pattern and continue down the same path. But if you take control back, you can break the cycle. "Enough", a song about continually trying to give someone close to you a chance to do the right thing, but they constantly follow the wrong path. “Break” was written about learning that you need to have thicker skin to prevail.
This album also includes a few things not typical of bands today. The song "Across the Shore" is an instrumental along the lines of Satriani's "Flying in a Blue Dream" era, with very piano-esque guitar. The song "Halloween" follows a storyline that singer Sean McIrvin penned when reminiscing through different perspectives of the holiday, from walking around as a child, to the adult now admiring tradition. Floating Along is a beautiful piece which mixes McIrvin's spoken word poetry with a powerful chorus that tugs the heart strings. The variety this band has started with looks like only a glimpse of what the future holds.
