Transformative Accoustic Indian Raga Based Jazz
Bio / Background
Kalyan Pathak is a versatile drummer, percussionist and tabla player working in a variety of musical styles travelling and touring within the USA and abroad with the likes of Fareed Haque, Goran Ivanovich, Drop Q, Tributosaurus and many others.
"Fleet finger Virtuosity..." Howard Reich of Chicago Tribune
In his own project Kalyan put together a 12 people ensemble for the purpose of exploring the Ragazz sound and to record a CD of his own original music. Kalyan assembled everyone at his home in the second week of January and after 2 rehearsal days they went to the "Hot Ham & Cheese" recording studio for 3 days to capture the sound the band had been creating under Kalyan's direction.
Why is this CD cool and different?
Unlike most of the commercial music in the market these days, the sound on this music album contains no digital samples, loops, or highly processed sound bits in search of the so-called ethnic or tribal sound.
↓ more ↓There are no fancy solo fixings, or digitally manipulated sections on this album. Therefore, what 12 musicians created in supercharged energy by being with each other for 5 consecutive days, is what you will hear.
The moments shared over spicy food and aromatic incense, and the time spent in intense discussions about music from India v/s jazz, eventually came to be reflected in our playing with each other. Each of us felt a sense of deep joy and a feeling of a profound experience in creating this music together and we hope to share that with our listeners.
Soms of the best jazz musicians of Chicago are playing on this record and this record has gotten air play on NPRs all across the USA.
