Featuring the timeless, soaring beauty of a world-class soprano, SEPIA is a moody, jazzy-folk album, with complex and literate songs all wrapped up in rich mixes that will tug and tantalize on those late dark stormy nights...
Bio / Background
Julie Dalia's debut album, SEPIA, is a delicate portrait for the discerning listener. Featuring the timeless, soaring beauty of a world-class soprano, SEPIA is world-class music for many other reasons.
One reviewer put it like this:
"From New Orleans, here is a voice that simply cannot be categorised - a soaring, delicate, melodic style...weaving in and out of her songs and stories...a jazz feel here, a torch song there...this doesn't fit in anywhere, it just is. Late at night, when it's stormy and dark, I play this as a warm-up to Miles. I can give it no higher recommendation." (Xero Tolerance, Australia)
The songs on this recording are imagistic and evocative, defying easy categorization. During its pre-release, a sweep of international rave reviews christened SEPIA as "Adult Alternative" and as "Crossover Music."
Another review: "It's wonderful to see that Dalia understands that a great song does not always a great record make.
↓ more ↓She wraps her works up in some beautiful, beautiful deep moods, like the rich folk-jazz moods employed by the likes of Ms. Joni Mitchell and The Story."
(The Splatter Effect, New York City)
Themes stretch from the mythic to the soulful with a literary yet very human, almost innocent essence. Elements of jazz, classical, rock and blues are integrated by the haunting, emotional presence of Dalia's flawless voice.
Even the jazz listener will be satisfied with the writing. Dalia's unique electric and acoustic guitar styles, coupled with extraordinary performances on jazz bass by Marty Ruddy, and dazzling electric lead guitar treatments by Jeff Ebnother, to name a few of the many musicians on board, create a seamless, breathing flow reminiscent of tides.
The tunes span from the rockish, dark "Your Face No More" to the tribal elegy "Daughters," which, incidentally, is sung partly in Cherokee and Kickapoo Ojibwe; to "Tchefuncte River" -- a virtuosic vocal piece having roots in Civil War era music; through, finally, the sparse, intense title track, "Sepia" -- a statement about women and culture taking reference from Greek Myth. Not simplified or abridged, it is a demanding work.
SEPIA Is Rich In Innuendo Yet Soothingly Melodic.
Our feedback about Julie Dalia's SEPIA is that it is wonderfully rich and complex - far from easy-listening; that it is full of surprises; that her voice is incredibly beautiful, and that is it good to listen to all alone in the dark; last, that it is good music to love by...we know that you will be pleased if you buy this album.
