Garage pop rock with a punk edge. Think Replacements meet Neil Young at Joe Strummers house.
Bio / Background
Johnny Tonite has returned after a nine-year hiatus with what may prove to be their finest moment “Liberty for Sale”. It is the bands fourth release and comes nearly a decade after their critically acclaimed first project “The Savage Ones”.
Of “The Savage Ones”, Greg Baker of New Times in Miami said, “Johnny rocks true right, no phony manipulative smokymirrors b.s. here, just rock songs beefed up by raw sincerity transmitted by voice, guitar, bass, drums, hand claps and incidentals You need this album if only to hear The Great Pretender, a majestic piece that might be the most infectious (in a good way) song released anywhere this year. The whole thing is pensiveangst munchable tasty, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Seek it out, dear rockers. “The Savage Ones”, a pure rock attack as deep and rich as an oil well”.
Sandra Schulman of XS Magazine in Fort Lauderdale said “The Savage Ones” a 12-song tape of pure, unadulterated rock & roll by Mr.

Rex Havoc of Jam Magazine said, “the songs here are folkish urban rock, mellow, with plenty of acoustic guitars and harmonies. The lyrics are generally thoughtful and introspective, often serving as snapshots of places, incidents, or ideas. Many of the songs recall the rock of the late 1960s and early seventies. There's a bit of Neil Young here, some Doors there, and some songs that sound positively drug induced”
Their second release ”Live Tonight” was greeted Miami New Times as straight-ahead rock played with the blazing energy of someone forced to record when "a religious war is knocking at my door," as Ruffner, sings in "Madness."
“Time of Arson” was a 13-song CD that Dennis Walking of Jam Magazine said is “Three cord rock with catchy arrangements and a no frills attack, make up most of this CD, Johnny Tonite's third. The group’s original compositions are spiced with the influences they wear on their sleeves: everyone from Neil Young to Jimmy Hendrix to The Ramones, to any on one of the multitudes of young groups who honed their skills in the underground garages of America from 1960 to the early '80s. As usual, the playing blends the, right measures of tightness and looseness and has an infectious soul”.
“Liberty for Sale” is a crisp 8-song release. It is moody, deep and moving with a strong political undertone. Dancing through the winding troubled indifferent times in search of a soul. Time may prove it was the best work from this highly regarded South Florida band.
