This 2004 GRAMMY Nominated CD (Best Large Jazz Ensemble) offers dazzling big band jazz. With guest soloist Bud Shank, featuring Pat and Joe La Barbera, and Clay Jenkins. Buddy Rich composer/arranger John La Barbera leads an all-star, studio big band
Editorial review
The son of a pianist and bassist and the brother of drummer Joe La Barbera and tenor saxophonist Pat La Barbera, John La Barbera was originally a trumpeter who became a skilled arranger/composer and an important educator. For this set, he utilizes a 16-piece orchestra that features such soloists as trumpeter Clay Jenkins (who is in top form), tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, altoist Kim Richmond, pianist Bill Cunliffe, both of his siblings, and (on "Mayreh") guest altoist Bud Shank. The writing is conventional if advanced, but the material is superior and there are surprises along the way. Highlights include the ten-and-a-half-minute "Walk on the Wild Side Suite" (which composer Elmer Bernstein praised), Horace Silver's "Mayreh," a particularly inventive reworking of "Eleanor Rigby," and a tribute to Art Blakey ("Message from Art") composed by Joe La Barbera. This set is easily recommended to fans of modern big bands. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
John La Barbera started playing cornet when he was five years old. At the age of seven he was performing with his parents and brothers Pat, and Joe in the La Barbera Family Band. His studies at the S.U.N.Y Potsdam, Berklee College, Eastman School of Music, and private study with Rayburn Wright contributed to his love of writing and strengthened his skills for a career in composition and arranging. By the late sixties John was playing trumpet and touring the world in the great Buddy Rich Orchestra. This was the beginning of his nineteen year association with Buddy as his principal composer/arranger. He went on to play and write for many renowned big bands and is now one of the most respected composer/arrangers in jazz. His works have been recorded and performed by Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme', Chaka Khan, Harry James, Bill Watrous, Bill Perkins, Al Cohn and Phil Woods just to name a few.
