Bio / Background
Joey Murphy was born in Springfield, Missouri. He came to New York at the age of eighteen. Shortly after he arrived he joined a band called "Please". Through this band and through offshoots of this band Joey recorded albums and went on tours, U.S. and abroad. Joey's first recording session began at Mother West Studio in the mid 1990's. It was here that Joey recorded the music that was used in the "Pile of Things" video and the music that was used in Dean Bell's movie. In the late nineties Joey spent many hours every day performing around town on the subway platforms. Joey soon started to amplify his sound and quickly moved to the streets above. Magda Meissner discovered Joey performing on the corner of Astor Place and Lafayette, inspiring her to produce two music videos "Pile of Things" and "Hurricane". Dean Bell, who also met Joey performing on the streets used a segment of "Foul Advocate" in his movie "What Alice Found" which screened at Sundance and Tribeca film festivals (2003).
↓ more ↓Joey has scored for the Sundance Channel's "Conversations in World Cinema: Ed Harris" and has performed on bills with Morphine, Thurston Moore, and John Zorn. In 2001 Joey was introduced to Sound Engineer, George Dugan at a random session in New York. Joey decided to work with George. The result was a recording session which would last for over a year. Joey struggled between playing on the street and going into the studio to finish his first album, "Washington Heights Sessions".

Summer afternoon daydreaming feel yet dynamic with a palpable presence of confident new york vibe. Songs might seem short (2 mins average) when you look at their lengh here but each of them is a real espresso of a song, 2 mins filled with just enough stuff to make you want those track on repeat a few times during the day. Earthy folk, dynamic grooves, deep texture and pleasant laconic lyrics that makes your imagination roll. Listen to it a few times and you'll find there's no filler track. Every little instrumental has a quality of Joey's passion and musicianship. No less can be expected from one of the finest musicians on the New York street and club music scene.
