Masterful finger-style, "neo-classical" instrumental guitar, the long awaited follow up CD to Joe Euro's critically acclaimed "The High Road".. "Eyes On The Horizon" features some soft, soothing, introspective pieces as well as some more dynamic ones.
Bio / Background
Guitarist/Multi-Instrumentalist Joe Euro lives in Port Townsend, Washington, a beautiful, historic, "Victorian" seaport town, where he records and performs his "neo-classical" guitar works.
This is the long awaited follow up CD to Euro's critically acclaimed "The High Road", which has been featured on such public radio syndicated shows such as "echoes" on PRI, and "Hearts Of Space"..NPR.
Several tracks of "Eyes On The Horizon" have also been featured on John Dilberto's "echoes" syndicated radio program on PRI and Euro was recently featured live on PRI's "West Coast Live" which was broadcast from the stage of the "Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival" in September'06, where Joe has been an annual featured performer for a number of years.
"Eyes On The Horizon" features mostly nylon string, classical, Spanish, "finger style" guitar, but with some untraditional tunings such as CGDGAD producing richly textured compositions.
↓ more ↓Euro launches several tracks on piano, such as "Saratoga Passage" and "San Juan Islands Sojourn" which he also plays, then adds overdubs of tasteful nylon string guitar improvs and melodic lead solos.
He also plays bass and percussion on a few of the tracks to add to the multi-layered richness and complexity of sounds.
Euro has come to enjoy boating in and around the waters of the Pacific Northwest's San Juan Islands, as well in Canada's Gulf Islands, and Desolation Sound. "Eyes On The Horizon" reflects, and was inspired by the nautical journeys Joe and his family and friends enjoy so much, and he has often been told that his music takes people on musical, "spirit" journies too.
One piece in particular, titled: "Then They Were Gone" he's often been told, reminds some listeners of the whales, both for their beauty and majesty, as they surface, then disappear again below the dark waters, but also for the sadness in the fact that these creatures are endangered. This tune is played in a similar way to a track titled "Midnight Watch" from his "High Road" release. Why not go to this track, "Then They Were Gone"..and have a listen? It really is a hauntingly beautiful ambient piece, and was featured often on "echoes" syndicated radio show PRI, which also featured several other tracks from this CD, such as "Mystery Bay" and another somewhat ambient piece titled, "The Fogs Of August".
Other tracks such as "Underway" and the title track,"Eyes On The Horizon", are bright and uplifting, relecting the joy and excitement from untying the boat from a moorage, or pulling up the anchor and getting...underway!
"Nautical Miles" is a track dedicated to his youngest son, Miles, who was not yet born when Euro recorded his first CD, "The High Road" which featured his other three children's laughter on a track titled "Child's Play". Miles loves "driving the boat", and often falls asleep looking aft at the wake. There is a small photo of Miles, with Joe at the helm of the boat, on the inside cover. Miles is more in to airplanes now though...."Nautical Miles" features Euro's techniques of using "hammer-ons" and "pull-off's on the basic track, with nylon string lead solo, and percussion. Joe says this is his "rockin' out" tune.
Euro also plays a couple of famous and familiar pieces plucked from the classical repertoire such as Eric Satie's "Gymnopedie #1", and the familiar, and hauntingly beuatiful Spanish favorite, "Romanza". All tracks are available on CD Baby for a listen!!! and they are available on many digital download sites such as iTunes, Rhapsody...and many more!
Joe also enjoys cycling and kayaking.
He often rides his highbred mountain bike to his small wine shop, The Wine Seller, in Port Townsend, Washington, that he founded in 1982. One of his other passions..fine wine..is how Euro makes some of his living in this beautiful seaport town.
Another passion of Joe's is travel, especially to historic and fascinating destinations in Europe, where he hosts and takes small groups to twice a year!!! Click on the web site, then go to The Wine Seller link from there...then click on "Travel" to see where Joe is taking folks off to next!!! "Wines Of The Adriatic" is his next "Remarkable Small Group Journey"!!! And Joe has been hosting Barge tours in France each Spring as well...keeping his eyes on the horizon...and always bringing a guitar along to occassionally serenade his fellow travellers.
Joe Euro will have a new release in late Spring/ Early Summer titled "Souvenir"!!!...keep you eyes and ears open for that soon!!!
