Bio / Background
HUMAN INTERESTING (a temporary retrospective) RLSD JULY '02
"Jim's been writing topical songs for as long as I can remember, bringing his acute wit and wry humor to a host of subjects that can really use both. In the tradition of Woody and Dylan, he cuts right to the heart with music you actually enjoy listening to. I'm a longtime admirer"
---------------Bonnie Raitt
Jim Page has been writing and singing songs professionally for over 30 years. Originally from the California Bay Area he wound up in Seattle by way of New York City in the early seventies. Soon after hitting Seattle Jim led the movement to successfully legalize street singing in 1974 and sang his case to the Seattle City Council and a packed Council Chambers of cheering free speech advocates, friends and the wildly curious. Jim proceeded to play everywhere and anywhere and he took off like a shot. A SHOT OF THE USUAL, was released in 1977 on his own label and received considerable acclaim.
↓ more ↓A circuitous, tree-lined, sometimes rocky and wonderful road of people and music unfurled in front of Jim.
The intervening years include too many records, compilations, awards, arrests, lost and found lovers, grammy nominations, near death experiences, and prancing ponies to begin to list Check out Jim's site at Jimpage.net
HUMAN INTERESTING is Jim's 17th full-length recording to date and it spirits you seamlessly from novice to seasoned performer. It's not only a great collection of 19 songs about amazing humans, their achievements and foibles, but also a portrait of a journey through over 30 years of Jim's musical incarnations.
Journal style liner notes and a trove of wonderful archive photos are gracefully collaged together along with some trippy memorabilia including a picture of a 30 year old paper bag with a song scrawled on it, a tattered copy of a busking permit invented for Jim by the Cambridge Folk Festival organizers and a news article announcing that the Doobie Brothers had finally located Jim Page to give him his fat royalty check for his instrumental on their platinum record.(curious?-give Ivory Salamander a listen)
Jim tours up and down the West coast a coupla times a year and makes annual tours to parts of the East Coast and Ireland. He's shared the stage with: Bonnie Raitt; Donal Lunny; John Trudell; Michael Hedges; Martin Carthy; Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee; U. Utah Phillips; Michelle Shocked; Joan Baez and loads more.
Jim has also performed opening sets for some unexpected people including: Helen Caldicott, Winona Laduke, Ralph Nader, Julie Butterfly Hill, Ken Kesey, and even President Bill Clinton. We are not anticipating a request for Jim's services from the current administration.
Jim's career and choices have not followed the traditional path of most musicians. His work and his professional journey, are prompted by the people and the causes he encounters, sometimes to the detriment of his financial stability. But in his own eyes, his priorities are straight. Jim's work shines with a sincerity and immediacy that can only be found outside of the mainstream industry - Jim is one of a kind.
This recording is more than just great music it's a wonderful confirmation that the folk tradition is alive and well. You'll be thinking Humans sure are Interesting after you get a load of this (temporary retrospective) of Jim Page.
"If Jim Page ain't the bastard son of Woody Guthrie then I'm T-Bone Walker" ----------Robert Hunter
