Bio / Background
"Everyone thinks Jill Cohn should be a star by now. In fact, while the Seattle-based songstress has made peace with her current status, her supporters are still demanding credit where credit is due. Their unsung folk hero has six studio albums under her belt, the most recent of which narrates Cohn's gracious acceptance of things she cannot change, from failed romance to elusive mainstream success. Her latest, Traveling Companion, captures 16 live performances spanning the seasoned artist's near decade-long career. If Norah Jones can make it, Cohn can too."
--Bill Frost (Salt Lake City Weekly) Oct.2005
"(Tractor Tavern) Jill Cohn's nearly constant tour swings through Seattle once again, bringing Cohn's own special blend of folk-infused pop. Pick a pop songbird--especially one who plays piano--and Cohn's probably been compared to her, but she has a style all her own that defies comparison.
↓ more ↓She's more sensual than most of her ilk, and she has an impressive voice that's capable of whispering or belting with equal impact."
--- GENEVIEVE WILLIAMS (The Stranger), Seattle WA.
About the CD:
16 songs recorded live by a Seattle-based artist with, in the words of Performing Songwriter, "...an expressive strong voice, and a lovely worldliness to her songs."
All live. All solo. All acoustic. All superb.
Produced by Jim Watts (Kelly Clarkson, String Cheese Incident), Travelling Companion is a compendium of 16 songs, a dozen new interpretations from earlier albums, plus four new compositions appearing here for the first time.
Impeccably recorded during the tour supporting her Seven Year Surrender album at Castoro Cellars, The Coffee Gallery, and Grandma's Warehouse, this release presents Jill in three very different and very intimate settings.
If you wish to recreate the actual concert experience while listening to the album, try putting your player in random mode. No two of Jill's shows are exactly the same, and her choices of material are often as spontaneous as your compact disc player's will be. Rest assured, though, that the program sounds just fine in the order it was assembled on the disc.
In some ways, this could well be "Jill Cohn 101" for those as yet uninitiated to her artistry, drawing on songs taken from Seven Year Surrender, Window To The Wise, The Absence Of Moving, and Songs From The Bluebus, reinterpreted for solo performance. For those already familiar with her work, these new versions spotlight the evolutionary nature of the songs, with new arrangements and (for some) new lyrics. [Newcomers are highly encouraged, of course, to avail themselves of Jill's extensive back catalogue at CD Baby!]
Whether you're coming to these songs as a recent initiate or a longtime fan, you'll no doubt find Travelling Companion a welcome musical roadmap to Jill's past, present and future.
