Hypnotic rock and roll.
Bio / Background
Biography
The Jets Overhead sound situates rock and roll immediacy in the context of a more hypnotic and trance-oriented backdrop, with influences ranging from Pink Floyd to The Velvet Underground to The Who. Formed in 2002, the band is a five-piece outfit based in Victoria, BC, Canada.
Though the project is brand new, members of the band do have a history together under a different name: The Special Guests. From 1999 to 2001, The Special Guests built a national following in Canada through a consistent touring ethic and a strong media buzz. The band shared the stage with acts such as Hot Hot Heat, The Dandy Warhols, Nickelback, Default, Sloan, Matthew Good Band, and Bif Naked. The Special Guests eventually signed to Canada's largest independent record label, Attic Records, but after a failed merger with the Song Corporation, the label was forced to declare bankruptcy shortly after the band's debut full-length was released.
↓ more ↓The band spent 2002 writing a new batch of material, which they self-produced and put to tape in their own rehearsal space in Victoria. When it came time to begin introducing the new music in the spring of 2003, the band formally decided to move away from its previous moniker and settled on Jets Overhead.
Jets Overhead debuted to great acclaim at Vancouver's New Music West festival in May 2003. Since then the band has toured the US west coast with Tegan and Sara and has opened for such Canadian notables as The Dears and 54-40. The band also launched its first overseas tour, with dates in Ireland and the UK in November 2003.
