Bio / Background
Unarmed is a cool collection of Jazz, African, Middle Eastern and Folk, with half of the cuts done with improvisational lyrics. That only works when the songwriter is really a poet, and you won't be disappointed. Calling on her African and Choctaw roots, Jesse shows reaches into the territory of the unseen on this one.
The whole collection is an anti-war protest, without yelling in your ears or wrankling your senses. Master drummer Akeem Ayanniyi adds his Djembe, Talking Drum, and Ashiko from a long line of master drummers in Nigeria on "Blind Man's Bluff" and "Beautiful." He speaks the intro in Yoruba on "Beautiful", and Jesse takes the traditional rhythms and catapults them into a new dimension, improvising a spoken word piece into a a full tilt call to the ancestors.
