Powerful, fresh alterna-rock combining extensive musical prowess with strong, passionate lyrics and a sensual yet ballsy presence - compared to Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and Alanis Morrisette.
Bio / Background
"Too bad the rules just don't apply to me."
This live-to-tell phrase from Jen Bye"s tune "Freckle Face Girl" is more than apropos in describing the L.A. native's life-long journey to musical self-discovery which has led her to critical notoriety and an insistent buzz in the local music scene.
Jen's first lead singing gig was with a Cocteau Twins/4AD -type band called Emerald Vein, founded by former punker Bob Young of Boston's UZI, and signed to the Belgian label Sub-Rosa. When the band broke up, Jen hit the scene as a solo artist. On her own, she traversed the coffee house/dive bar circuit while working on other projects both live and studio for numerous other artists.
Jen sites many eclectic artists as musical influences from Sam Phillips and PJ Harvey to Depeche Mode, Nick Cave and Aimee Mann to David Byrne. A self-described "lyric nazi," our girl has culled from her experiences and insights to create a unique and strong voice that is 100% 21st century.
↓ more ↓Although at times her voice is angelic, Jen can, and does, turn it around in an instant.
With ethereal harmonies and a clear, strong timbre, Jen's been compared to Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and Alanis. But luckily for us, she sounds like no other female making music today. Combining her extensive musical prowess with strong, passionate lyrics and a sensual yet ballsy stage presence, Jen's live shows are arresting and unforgettable.
In December 2001, Jen entered producer Denny Weston, Jr.'s Mandeville Canyon studio to begin her long-awaited 6-song EP. With cohorts Michael McCarthy (guitar), Jeff Manol (bass), and Jim Loftus (drums), Jen has created a disc that is fresh and compelling, stick-in-your-head tunes that can't be ignored. And neither will she.
