Shakuhachi music for another space
Bio / Background
Jeff and Izumi have created something quite beautiful in the recording of “Silent Letters, Secret Pens.” Having a great fondness for both the shakuhachi and traditional Japanese music, I find that each listen brings a new gift, and an ever-deepening appreciation for their masterful and eloquent performance. Much time and effort went into choosing the most ideal, natural recording environment for these pieces (Mashiki Bunka Hall, Kumamoto, Japan) and veteran engineer, Richard Gilbert, perfectly captured the subtleties and resonant beauty of each instrument.
"Silent Letters, Secret Pens" is a wonderful, dynamic journey... modern compositions, written by world-class, Japanese and American composers, explore new territory, while the next path winds back 700+ years, to the distant echo of bamboo... all the while being guided by the grace and fluidity of Jeff and Izumi.
Derek Van Choice – musician, shakuhachi maker
