Sophisticated, unique and intimate jazz vocals
Editorial review
Jan Shapiro has paid her dues over several decades, performing and also teaching at the college level, though she is competing for recognition with what seems to be an endless, growing supply of female jazz vocalist. This self-produced CD focuses on familiar standards and jazz compositions, with good support from a band including pianist Tim Ray, guitarist John Baboian, bassist John Repucci and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. Shapiro's subtle style is a refreshing change from over-enthusiastic singers who overreach their abilities; she instead prefers to communicate the essence of the lyrics, occasionally indulging in scatting "Just Squeeze Me." Her arrangement of "Don't Be That Way" is a sensitive duet with Baboian, while she gets playful in the soulful take of "Sister Sadie." One can feel the longing in her interpretation of "Change Partners" and she wraps the session with a brisk miniature setting of "'S Wonderful." Jan Shapiro clearly deserves wider recognition outside jazz academic circles. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
This is Jan's latest CD singing jazz standards with her own unique arrangements.
Backed by stellar musicians, Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, Tim Ray on piano, John Repucci on bass, and John Baboian, Shapiro floats through these songs with ease . Her intimate interpretation of Irving Berlin's standard 'Change Partners' makes you feel as if she is singing right to you. In fact, the whole CD sounds like she is singing directly to you!
In the genre of Diana Krahl and Shirley Horn, this is a CD that you would choose for any intimate setting .
Jan has performed as a live performer for many years,as well as a studio vocalist in her early career. Originally from St. Louis Missouri, she lives and teaches in Boston , where she holds the position of Voice Dept. Chair at Berklee College of Music , Boston, Ma.
