Heavenly melodies and inspirational settings of poems and sacred songs.
Bio / Background
So much is rare and noteworthy: the craggy peeks, the moors at dusk, the sunset silhouette of ancient castle ruins, the deep greens of the valleys and fields, the purple heather of the highlands. Come with me on a voyage of music and discovery…
Tracing one’s family roots by journeying back to the old lands, is for many a once in a lifetime adventure. To tread the soil, breathe the air of generations, appreciate the differences of the seasons and the temperatures and climate- to experience breathtaking scenery like this! And to this add tales of ghosts and imagination.
The sacred islands composed of Scotland, England, Ireland and the low-countries like Flanders are rich in history and natural beauty. Visitors and locals marvel at the landscapes, the seasons, the fascinating stories and myths. The melodies and words of the songs and poems are as much a part of why this part of the world is so unique and special, as the hills and shorelines themselves.
↓ more ↓I was fortunate in my lifetime to journey back from Perth, Western Australia to Edinburgh, Scotland. Sunny days were spent out on the Pentland Hills and rainy days on red double-decker busses taller than many of the shops of the narrow, cobblestone streets. From the moment we arrived it all seemed perfectly natural to be here. And then I heard a first piper, unseen from the distance!
The openness and kindness of the people wherever we journeyed made it always a special time to share. The Gaelic of the highland folk changed from district to district, and I recall this wild spirit of adventure as our ferry reached the Isle of Skye, entering the fishing village dock, the hillsides disappearing up into the mist.
From cobblestones to first snowflakes, from football as the national past-time to the piping at the Edinburgh Tattoo, it’s a magical land. From the immortal words of Robert Burns to famous songs and lesser-known melodies, I hope the music on ‘A Red, Red Rose’ brings you closer to the places and memories that I treasure- as I hope you will too.
