Rootsy guitar-driven, lyrically-rich jam-pop with an occasional bourbon-soaked crunchiness that treads not-so-lightly between dark humor and the abyss.
Bio / Background
"If only the headache would precede the
intoxication, alcoholism would be a virtue"
- Samuel Butler
"Junkyardcafe" was recorded at TNT Productions in Louisville, KY by Phillil Stirgwolt, and mixed by Grammy nominated engineer Tim Stroh at Sante Fe, NM's Stepbridge Studios.
"Jakeleg" is a prohibition-era term that refers to paralysis of the leg resulting from consuming lead-tainted moonshine (frequently distilled in old car radiators).
The Critics almost Rave for "Junkyardcafe":
"In yet another example of how much diverse talent exists here. . .Jakeleg's second release. . .strolls in with a rootsy pop sound that recalls early REM, dB's and Paul Collins' Beat. The tone of this album is all over the map. . .But clearly there is a vision here, and Jakeleg fulfills it admirably."
Kevin Gibson, Louisville Eccentric Observer, www.leoweekly.com
"A giant leap forward for the band...
↓ more ↓lush guitars, layered voices, the attention to detail that befits the complexity of the new songs. 'Junkyardcafe' has an eclectic variety of sounds only hinted at in 'Pour me to Bed'..."
Bryan Hurst, Louisville Eccentric Observer
"Junkyardcafe [is] more of what the band's fans have come to expect--amiable, unpretentious tavern rock 'n' roll that occasionally sneaks up and clips you with a dark confession or drunken insight."
Jeffrey Lee Puckett, The Courier Journal

The Band:
Barrett Cooper: Drummer. Born in Louisville. Barrett graduated from SMU in Theater, and has an MFA from Alabama Shakespeare. He did the New York thing., and worked in Regional Theaters. Barrett currently teaches @ Walden Theatre in Louisville. A former member of Alfred's Attack Slinky Band, he recorded with Mr. Grover's B.C. Band in the late 70's. He pounded the skins with various bands throughout college including Ricky & the Mortar Blasters. Barrett plays the drums like Keith Moon on steroids. Beware.
Patrick Donley: Bass. Born in Louisville. Mr. Donley attended Davidson College in NC, with a BA in Studio Art, followed by an MFA from Northwestern. Patrick was living in Seattle when Nirvana was still in the garage. A painter, he co-runs Zephyr Gallery in Louisville. He also appeared with Alfred's and Mr. Grover's during the punk days (real "old school") with Barrett. Rhythm guitar was the instrument of choice with various bands in college. He dusted off the bass for Jakeleg. Will never go back.
Jeremy Morris: Guitar. Born in Louisville. Jeremy has two BA's (Spanish & Political Science) & an MA in Political Science all from U of L. He played guitar with Bruce Linn in the Embittered Tango Demons. Jeremy is currently working for KY Refugee Ministries, a refugee resettlement agency, where he speaks Spanish, Bosnian, French and a little bit of English (and beginning Swahili). He's very handy when the rest of us get tongued-tied.
Kirkby Tittle: Guitar. Born in Louisville. Kirk is a Transylvania Grad, with a Masters in Creative Writing from Vermont College. Kirby is a published author(Barbarian Parade, Hillstreet Press, Athens, GA) and editor of fiction & poetry with Sarabande Books in Louisville. He lived in France for two years, and has felt his heart ache like a shredding bone. Kirby played guitar in Wolf Pen Shack. He also played in an early version of Ten Foot Pole, out of Lexington in the late 80's. After putting away his guitar for ten years (he loves music, but didn't like musicians), Kirk is back with a vengeance.
