Jazz trumpeter, Dan Jacobs releases, "JAZZ STANDARD TIME," to wide critical and popular acclaim. "Dan Jacobs is one helluva trumpet player." - Jim Clark, Jazz Host, KUSD-FM. "Beautiful CD, lyrical, tasteful playing, a great CD." - Bobby Shew, trumpet
Editorial review
Three musicians from Michigan, all brothers, who went their separate artistic and professional music ways for 25 years have been brought together under the aegis of the Sea Breeze Jazz label for an album of classic standard material plus two originals. Dan Jacobs on trumpet and flugelhorn, Rod Jacobs on drums, and Chuck Jacobs on bass are joined by Nashville jazz guitarist Randy Dorman plus percussion for this very acceptable session of highly lyrical and melodic performances. Carrying the main musical responsibility is the Chet Baker-like understated, cool horn of Dan Jacobs and the tastefully resonant guitar of Dorman. They collaborate on virtually every track and are especially mutually harmonious on the Brazilian beat "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" and the straightforwardly played "Old Folks." While most of what is being performed has been played countless times before by a countless number of good musicians, the brothers bring sufficient originality and freshness to their arrangements that each of these tunes are worth revisiting. The arrangements of "Summertime" and "Love for Sale" combine the highly jazzed trumpet of Dan Jacobs and bluesy guitar of Dorman laid atop tasteful percussion by Brian Kilgore and the drums of brother Rod Jacobs, making this piece sound as if they were coming from a caf? in Rio de Janeiro that also features classic New Orleans jazz. Very good stuff indeed. All the stops are pulled on a rousing bonus track of "Desert Sunrise" where Jacobs' trumpet takes on Spanish coloring. A beautifully haunting "Can't Stop the Crying" by Bobby Shew has been included as a hymn of remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001. Hopefully it won't take another quarter century for the members of this talented family to get to the studios one again. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan, All Music Guide

"Dan Jacobs' trumpet solo style is unique and original, his tone is clean and pure and he can go upstairs on a moments notice. He has what every musician strives for and rarely achieves . . . their own identity." - John Gilbert, Jazz Review.com
"Dan, I enjoyed your trumpet playing very much. You're a great jazz player and I loved your tone. Your command of the instrument is ferocious!"
- Wayne Jackson, trumpet player with "The Memphis Horns."
"Wow! Excellent CD. Beautiful trumpet playing, very lyrical, good lines, clear sound, very tasteful indeed."
- Bobby Shew - international trumpet master and teacher
"Dan Jacobs' trumpet playing is clearly about taste and musicality. Technique serves the music. His sense of time is rock solid, enabling him to play right in the center of the groove, or sensitively lay back, behind the beat, to infuse live, in-the-moment emotion into his music.
↓ more ↓Jacobs' sound is very attractive here - not only because of his lines, but just to savor some of the long tones with which he maturely begins his improvisations. Slow ballads have a way of separating the more experienced players from their less experienced counterparts. Dan Jacobs' sound is completely exposed here, and he expresses himself magnificently."
- Winthrop Bedford, Writer-reviewer, JAZZ IMPROV magazine.
"Trumpeter Dan Jacobs' playing is very evocative and heartfelt. Intriguingly so. I particularly like his sense of space in his playing; I love guys who are so confident in what they have to say that they're not afraid to let the silences add depth to the overall picture." - John Hammel, WNTI - FM, jazz writer and reviewer.
This is a lyrical, melodic sojourn into straight-ahead jazz from Jacobs brothers, Dan (trumpet, flugelhorn), Ron (drums), and Chuck (bass), and the results are incredibly tasty and listenable. You'll definitely hear a Chet Baker quality to Dan Jacob's playing, which adds depth and richness to the arrangements. This one's a no-brainer - pick up a copy of this one, and set your musical clock to JAZZ STANDARD TIME!

Dan Jacobs is one helluva trumpet player! Everything on this CD is pleasing to the ear. Another impressive release from the folks at Sea Breeze."
- Jim Clark, Jazz Music Director/Host, KUSD-FM
How refreshing to have a new collection of favorite jazz standards by the Jacobs Brothers. Their CD "Jazz Standard Time" features strong musicianship and fine jazz arrangements of tunes like the Gershwin's Summertime, Rodgers and Hart's Falling in Love With Love and Cole Porter's Love for Sale. These tunes and the rest of the selections on this CD are beautifully done, and retain the lovely melodies and moods of the original songwriter. Yet, the fine playing of these musicians brings a fresh take to our favorite standards. This is a CD that will endure. It will be on our regular playlist for a long time to come.
- Mike Raymond, Jazz Director, WTIP-FM
Jazz Standard Time has appeal for all jazz aficionados by reaching the inner complex senses of the most critical jazz listener to the smooth jazz enthusiast looking to improve a glass of chardonnay at a cocktail party. Dan, Rod & Chuck Jacobs have created Jazz Standard Time in a way that jazz was meant be captured in a recorded format: fun, raw and by bringing the listener to a point that they sense as if the musicians are there performing live rather than traveling through the speakers. All three brothers are world-class musicians and that is mirrored within the project.

Judiciousness and taste are not by their nature things that spring up and grab you by the collar. Only after repeated hearings does one really appreciate the subtlety here: the expressiveness of the trumpet, the taste and drive of the guitar, the comfortable swing and spring of the rhythm section, and the extraordinarily pithy and well-integrated percussion work. Music like this can more than stand on its own with just the level of the musicianship . . . the message contained inside is a welcome bonus!

It rarely gets better than this!!! I highly recommend it to any jazz enthusiast. And for those of you that want to start getting in to jazz for the first time, this is an excellent CD for diving in to the genre.
