Bio / Background
Ian Jutsun is one of those rare individuals who has lead an active life: fully engaged, alert, slightly reckless and unsettled. Open to grief and to joy, Ian can tell you with clarity and warmth about what has happened to him in his life. I don’t know if you could ever know the range of his personality but for the degree to which he breathes excitement and depth into his life stories and his songs.
“The magic of music lies in the emotional affect that draws us in as we listen,” says the one time recipient of a Canadian FACTOR Songwriting music award. Through a song not only do you feel you know and identify with the composer but you also recognize more of yourself. This is the passion and message of Ian’s first collaboration with Michael Da Vinci. Together they listened, combined and composed a collection of songs for Ian’s debut Solo CD “ JUTSUN” that rejoices in the gift of living.
↓ more ↓Although the music changed and evolved during the writing process the great joys of each song remained: insight, escape, knowledge and inspiration.
He started singing at the age of 13 with several Montreal based bands such as Sahara, Black Ice and Foreplay playing local bars and events. Ian was featured on a national broadcast show called “Made In Canada” and even had a song sent into outer space with Canadian astronaut Marc Garneau. Since then Ian has entertained crowds in over 1100 live performances and shows in and around the Toronto area. Performing in front of a live audience through the years has helped him to develop his vocal strength and showmanship.
With a musician’s ear for accents the best thing Ian ever did was to show the world his transporting power of story telling through his acting and music. His achievements in the TV and film industry, his ability to sing in 6 languages (Spanish, Italian, French, English, Punjabi, and Hindu) and in an array of different musical genres (Pop, Funk, Rock, Pop classical and Big band) is a testament to the depth of his talent.
“I just love music and performing,” says the accomplished performer who launched his Broadway career singing at a friend’s wedding. Bombay Dreams (an Andrew Lloyd Weber production) on Broadway showcased Ian’s talented range of singing and acting. He was very impressive when performing on Broadway whether it was as a featured singer (Quwali singer, Lament singer) or performing a principle role (Madan) revealing himself in much deeper ways than expected.
The opportunity to work directly with AR Rahmann during Bombay Dreams allowed Ian to achieve another personal goal of working with one of the greatest composers of modern time. After working with Ian and recognizing his tremendous vocal abilities, Rahmann composed a featured song for Ian called “The Lament” performed during the funeral procession. The musical director of the show, Jim Abbott, once stated that, “Ian’s performance of the Lament created the most beautiful and soulful moment in the show! He strives for perfection each and every time he performs the piece”. The “ Lament” was only featured in the Broadway version of the production.
The music of this debut CD “JUTSUN” is brilliantly simple in intention and yet so beautifully complex in purpose that if you listen to it closely you can hear the symphony of years Ian has spent perfecting his craft and in turn it will connect with the heartbeat inside of you. Ian now looks forward to hitting the road and performing live all around the world.
