Eclectic Americana from an award-winning songwriter.
Bio / Background
Born to musician parents in Nashville, 1972, Ben grew up surrounded by authentic folk music. From a very early age he played and sang music in school and church and began writing his own songs as a high school student.
From 1993 to 1997 he worked as a resident artist for Theater at Lime Kiln, an outdoor venue in Lexington, Virginia, where he was influenced by many of the artists who performed in the summer concert series – Alison Krauss, Robin & Linda Williams, Tim O’Brien, John Hartford, Norman Blake and Gillian Welch, to name a few.
After a decade of practice, Ben recorded his first CD, “The Present Plays,” an eclectic sampling of 11 original songs celebrating togetherness, separation, and the perception of those distances between. Ben’s writing spans a range of genres, from bluegrass and folk to country and pop.
↓ more ↓In addition to being a singer, songwriter, and musician, Ben has extensive acting credits in various theatrical productions, staged readings, film and television. Ben is a graduate of The College of William & Mary in Virginia, where he studied theater, music and Japanese.

Awards and Recognition for Ben Hulan and THE PRESENT PLAYS:
Ben Hulan's new song, "Poor Boy" won Best Song in the West Coast Songwriter's Sonoma County Open Mic, July, 2006.
Ben Hulan was nominee in the BEST NEW ARTIST category for the Washington Area Music Association "WAMMIE" awards, 2005!
"The Thief of Baghdad" (recorded for this album but excluded from the final cut,) won 4th place in the Social/Political category of the Unisong International Songwriting Contest, 2004.
"Saturday Time" won Honorable Mention in the Adult Contemporary category of the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, 2004. (Please note: I am grateful for the award, but feel neither adult, nor contemporary.)
A home recording of "Riptide" was the recipient of an Honor Award in the Folk category of The Great American Song Contest, 2003. The guitar part for this song was inspired by the music of the Indigo Girls and Suzanne Vega.
A demo of "Orbiting" was chosen from a large pool of submissions to be the first track on the compilation album, "Focus Presents: Capital Acoustics, Vol. 3". That album is a collection of 20 songs from 20 DC-area songwriters.

This is a good album. I only listened to the 30 second shorts and found myself really enjoying it.
