An eclectic, intelligent and emotional collection of jazz standards and jazz-influenced musical theater songs, many of which are lesser known and not often recorded.
Editorial review
You can tell after just one track, or sometimes even faster, whether a singer who brands herself a jazz performer has the right combination of vocal equipment and feel for the music to make such a claim credible. In the case of Pittsburgh performerLisa Hindmarsh, all it took was a couple of measures to make her claim quite acceptable. With impressive musical education credentials from both West Virginia University and Marshall University, as well as being a member of the a cappella group In Voice, Hindmarsh is endowed with that sense of phrasing which catches the full flavor of each song she sings while simultaneously imbuing that feeling of jazz into them. Whether it be her torch version of the Peggy Lee favorite "Fever," where she rides the pillow of Jay Weaver's bass guitar and Mike Visnick's snare or Frank Podroskey's trumpet and fl?gelhorn providing the melodic framework, as Hindmarsh offers a poignant, slightly soulful "The Meaning of the Blues." "Let's Get Away From It All" is a vehicle to show off considerable swinging skills. Of the many qualities that make this debut album attractive is Hindmarsh's ability to do jazz without adopting the affectations and gestures that are sometimes associated with this class of singers, although there is a hint of scatting, on "Bluesette." She gets plenty of support throughout the session from top-of-the-list Pittsburgh jazz performers. Especially important is keyboardist/pianist Al Snyder, who makes sure that the music doesn't stray from that gait and lilt which illuminates Hindmarsh's style the most. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Pittsburgh singer Lisa Hindmarsh has quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest singers in the city, known for her consummate technical skill, intelligent musical taste, and a rare level of emotional connection with her audiences.
If you're looking for the latest screaming diva, a la Mariah, Celine, Christina or Britney, this is not the music for you.
Lisa's strength is in her amazing gift for subtlety and nuance.
Seldom will you find a singer who can communicate on more emotional levels in a single song.
This is a woman who understands and believes every word she is singing, who has carefully considered the best way to touch her audience, reaches out with everything she has inside her, and never fails to draw the listener into her world.
She will provoke you, excite you, make you sad, make you laugh, and make you think, but no matter what, you will not be unmoved.
Then there's the voice.
↓ more ↓It's an instrument of great flexibility and power, capable of the barest caressing whisper or a joyous shout and every level in between, spontaneous scat from the very bottom to the very top of her extensive range, a pure unadulterated straight tone or full vibrato, and a precision of pitch that is all too rare in many modern singers.
Thanks to fourteen years of classical training, a tremendously gifted ear, and an extensive knowledge of music theory, Lisa can sing in seven languages with equal skill and can handle the most demanding melodic line and most inventive, difficult scat passage with complete ease.
Lisa has become well-known in Pittsburgh as the alto member of the popular a cappella quintet, InVoice. She has performed with them all over the region for over six years. The group is renowned for their perfect blend, eclectic repertoire encompassing jazz, pop, rock, country, and gospel music, and rapport with their audiences. They have recorded a successful CD, called "Out of Nowhere", and continue to delight listeners in performances.
"Now I Know" is Lisa's debut solo recording, and in it she returns to her jazz roots and her greatest musical love.
This is an artist who is not to be missed!
