Musical Storytelling from the Heart of the Peace Jungle
Bio / Background
Hajb the Mad Poet roars,
His furious nuclear furnace,
Contained only
By love’s gravity.
Boundless Gratitude shines,
With sun light that brings
Children out to play
And teases flowers ‘til they bloom
On balmy spring and summer days.
Is there a name that says them both?
Ali, both the exalted
And the exaltation: truth
Arrayed in light laughter
Plays tickle tag with
Worrisome dark inklings.
This CD was released to mark the 25th anniversary of my military service on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier during the 1979 "Iraninan Hostage Crisis." That's when I was first introduced to the geo-politics of petroleum. I came away with the distinct impression that the oil companies were more of a threat to the peace and freedom of ordinary people than the people we were being sent to fight against; and with the uneasy feeling that the enemy was not overseas.
↓ more ↓Twenty-five years later, particularly in light of the events of September 11, 2001 and their aftermath, the impressions and feelings of 25 years earlier seemed to have become obvious facts. I felt as if my lifelong ideals of God and Country were being shamelessly betrayed by the august institutions of Church and State.
So the first two tracks of the Homeland Security CD are inspired by the Sufi saying, "Shatter your ideals on the rock of truth." But the CD doesn't stay there. The inspiration for all of the works, even when they touch on political themes, is spiritual rather than political. Track 6, "The Enemy Within" is perhaps the most concise and direct example. It's not about a political conspiracy, but about each of us being honest with our own selves. The way I see it, that's the only true source of security, homeland or otherwise. I almost named the CD "Walk for Peace" for the title of the song on Track 3, which actually reflects the energy of the entire CD more fully than any of the other single tracks. So if you pick one to sample from the list at the left, I'd suggest Track 3.
The name Hajb the Mad Poet, by the way, comes from the initials of my name, Hassaun Ali Jones-Bey. Back in the fall of 1979, when I was stationed on that aircraft carrier, I started my first journal, in which I wrote my first song. Inside the front cover of that journal, wrote: "Ravings of Hajb the Mad Poet."
From the Homeland Security liner notes:
"Hajb the Mad Poet says that one man's ideology is another man's bigotry. So perhaps instead of spreading so much ideology around the globe, it might be better to fill our local ideological practices with so much love that everyone who encounters them finds blessings instead of oppression."
