Review of self-titled Graffiti 61
As the package's psychedlic collage of assorted colors and artistic styles suggests, graffiti 61's self-titled release explores an entwined variety of hues and modes as envisioned by dominic massaro and friends.
Everyday instrumentation (guitar, bass, keys, voice and percussion) is swirled like paints finger-spread into slightly-blurry-yet-entrancing curlicues and smears. Glaring murk arises from an honest answer is like a kiss on the lips, to be pumped up by catchy beats and caressed by etherealized vocalizations. Sinuous guitar patterns rise and fall like smokey currents wafting through sweetly hypnotic dreamland, backed unobtrusive drumming.
Pattering ethnodrums meet with interestingly skewed strings and a buried vocal mantra in hazily-shifting no time. Seemingly subaquatic jangles and radiovoices emerge in the faintly chugging rhythm of black clouds and purple flowers (6:45).
↓ more ↓Laced with half-heard entities, the electric spirals and acoustic strums of gentle wind whispers baby (2:14) end this never-aggressive mystery trip (which could cause placid flashbacks!).
Relatively "ordinary" music-makers are used to transform the airwaves into exotic-yet-accessible audio-visions. A little lo-fi, but pleasantly so... like the casual comfort of a new-found friend.
