Bio / Background
A singer/guitarist/songwriter/engineer with an almost unhealthy music obsession and rock & roll coursing through his veins, Nate Gowtham has played all over the East Coast, both with his Boston-based band junegroove, and now as a New York City centered solo artist. Subtly defying categorization, Nate's sound exists somewhere between the rootsy Americana of Ryan Adams and the more complex, emotional song structures of The Catherine Wheel. Growing up in a religious home in Massachusetts, he fostered a love for catchy melodies and mind-bending music, first with 80's metal bands, then on to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. After following the grunge phase until it ran out of steam, Nate turned to a communal approach to music, favoring the style of The Grateful Dead, Phish, The Allman Brothers, etc. After many years playing music inspired by such acts, Nate needed an evolutionary left turn, and was turned on to Radiohead, which changed everything.
↓ more ↓After enveloping himself in British bands such as The Catherine Wheel, Spiritualized, and The Verve, Nate realized he longed for something American. At this point, his long love of Wilco became obsession, and he found himself immersed in The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown, The Counting Crows, The Black Crowes, and so on. While consistently writing songs all along the way, it was the Zen-like balance of all these influences that converged in the early 2000's to bring Nate to his strongest, most compelling songs to date - the songs that now comprise "The New Math."
